Papa's tackle?

Post by bulldog1935 »

I would love to see a higher resolution file of this photo.

Cane rod, intermediate wraps, uplocking seat - Powell or FE Thomas, Hardy? (Hemingway was a Charles Ritz fan, also)
The back of the reel looks so much like a Young, but no shield. Maybe an LRH or Princess?
what do you think?

Looks like Princess size, but spindle boss and reel back looks more like St. George.
Rod I have no clue but uplocking seat uncommon, especially with full intermediates. Those intermediates on the butt section look real close together too. Cool photo!

St. George would make sense - i know he bought a St. George when he returned home from WWI.

The grip shape, size of the but cap, and close intermediates rule the rod out as a Powell to me.

If you can send me the highest res image you have, or direct me to the location where you got the one you have, I was taught by someone who was at the forefront of digital research and photography on how to enlarge images and maintain detail...long shot with older images but willing to try.

the image I posted is the highest resolution I found - zoomed up a pixelated image for the 2nd photo.

glued to the computer and tinkering today. My daughter is wrestling in Team USA Junior Nationals, and I'm watching for her mat assignments (and teammates) to pop up.

First, congrats to your daughter.

I found the image on Getty. It was a little higher resolution which helped. I've made it 500% larger. This could be just degradation, but there appears to be one or two stickers between the second and fourth intermediate from his thumb. And it could just be distortion of a highlight or shadow.

Hope this helps.

To me the rod appears likely to be Hemingway's Hardy Fairy, one of only two fly rods he had with him in 1939 when he first came to Sun Valley in Idaho (the other, which might also be this rod, was a John James Hardy "in poor repair"). Hemingway is known to have fished with a Hardy St. George, which looks to be the reel shown in the photo. Using a Hardy Corona line, he fished wets using two or three flies, according to a letter written on September 2, 1973 by Jack Hemingway. See: AMFF blog post from 2015, Hemingway's tackle

I thought it was Poncho Via. I like his vintage deep water wading jacket, it's perfect. What a classic shot, Thank's!

My first thought on the rod was a Hardy, but I don't think it's the one that Quash posted. The rod in the image has an up locking seat.

I'm always fascinated by these vintage photos. It speaks a lot not only of the tackle, but the methods and accoutrements. Nice post Bulldog.
