The wife and I are planning a trip North Carolina with a day in Mount Airy. My, so far, cursory research suggests the Ararat River runs right through town and is a respectable trout stream. So, to those of you who are acquainted with the area: could a guy just wander into the River With hip boots and fish in the middle of town or fish from the bank? Or any recommendations of a local guide ?
Any flies I should be tying ? Thinking of being there in late October.
Any help would be appreciated

#2Yes - you can wade in anywhere as greenway trail follows along river entire length through town. No need for guide.
Delayed harvest begins 10/1 each year with fish stocked around that date.
Nymphs are best as all fish are stockers.

#3Vaughan,
Thanks! That is great to hear.
It’s the only fishing I imagine will be possible on the trip and it sound like a nice low key day!
