Market Prices for Bamboo/Cane Spinning Rods??

#1

Post by shoaliedude »

Earlier this week, I lost an auction for a “bamboo fly rod” that was actually a Gene Edwards spinning rod. Congrats to the winner. I also lost on a Uslan spinning rod that was properly identified. Congrats again.

I regularly fish a Phillipson Peerless spinner (and a Smuggler fly rod) for Shoal Bass. I just guessed at the price of the Peerless spinner when I gave a client a $100.00 credit on his legal fees. That experience and this week's bidding made me think about the market prices of bamboo spinning rods. I haven't seen any real guidance on spinning rod prices, so I decided to do an “E-bay market analysis” by searching the sold listings for the past 90 days in hopes of learning "what the market will bear." Having done so, I am sharing the results in hope of prompting discussion about the value of bamboo/cane spinning rods.

A reminder: The rules of this board prevent negative discussions of particular ebay sales and linking to them. This thread should not digress into calling any buyer a fool or seller a greedy lunatic. I have provided basic info regarding sales, but no photographs or links to particular sales.
–-----------------------------------------------------------

I have broken my search results into two sections. A “bamboo” section and a “cane” section.

SECTION ONE: Total Bamboo Spinning Rods Sold at auction: 48 found in a search of “bamboo spinning rod.” I excluded the terms “japan, japanese, and grampus.” Some listed items were ignored if Japanese, if unsold, or if not really spinning rods. One rod (an Alcocks) found in the bamboo “auction only” search was regrouped with the rods found in the “cane” search. After removal, only about 20 auctioned items remain.

36 bamboo spinning rods were listed as “Buy It Now.” Many had ridiculously high prices. Only three sold. I have moved one, a Hardy Wanless, to the “cane” section of this report.

SECTION TWO: CANE Spinning Rods Sold at auction: A search was conducted for “cane spinning rod” excluding the words “bamboo, Japan, Japanese, grampus and bamboo.” This search revealed almost exclusively Anglo-European (British) rods. I question whether a couple of listings with spiked ferrules are actually “spinning rods” but I didn't cut them out.

7 cane spinning rods were listed as “Buy It Now.” Four were sold. Sixteen were sold at auction.

Interesting report. Thanks for taking the time to compile it. I'm 75 yrs old and I cant remember when I started fishing. I've been fishing my entire life. I have fly rods of cane, glass and only two graphite. I have spinning and casting rods of glass and graphite. I very much enjoy fishing my f e thomas rod with Young reel and silk line and north country spiders, to complete the outfit (all 1937 vintage). I cant imagine why anyone would want to fish with a cane spinning rod. Modern high modulus materials are vastly superior in spinning and casting applications. Perhaps I'm missing something but for spinning and casting, go glass or graphite. Leave the cane for collectors.

I fish a Phillipson Peerless spinning rod and a Smuggler fly rod on shoal bass canoe trips in Spring and Fall in South Georgia. I primarily use the Smuggler in the wadeable shoals, but the spinning rod loaded with a Zoom Superfluke (.3 oz) while floating between the shoals. Casting from a sitting position I can reach about 130 feet either direction which permits me to cover a fairly large amount of the river. Distance is not as good a graphite, but I have the mental/spiritual satisfaction of fishing two bamboo rods from about the time of my birth. There is, of course, the issue of weight. My shoulder is always a bit more fatigued at the end of the day than it would be with graphite.

Also, this spinning rod market research is a "test run" at doing the same thing with the more voluminous number of flyrods that I intend to perform over Thanksgiving.

While I can't fly fish like I used to do to the addition of balance issues I will fly fish where I have reasonably stable places to do so. I do have a couple of bamboo spinning rods. one by WE Edwards and it's 6 sided, the other by LL Dickerson made for the American Casting Club in 1939. I might try to find the right reel for the Dickerson, since I have a good match for the Edwards, and see if that will at least extend days a fishing next year. Great report by the way.

I never really thought much about vintage spinning rods, but what would be the criteria for selecting a spinning reel to match or be suitable for a vintage cane spinning rod (other than its age alone)? I would think a half bale Aerex model would look nice or a green penn. I know they're not great reels but some of the old Ocean City spinning reels bring back fond memories.

There are a lot of working 50s-60s Bache Browns, Italian made Orvis, and Damm Quicks available.. Mitchell 300s remain the standard.

Modern reels are frequently too light to balance bamboo - though the retrieve is faster. I fish a Penn 440ss on my Peerless spinner for now. Meh. I'm looking for a coppered Mitchell

Hey Bulldog:

I've got an old Bache Brown 2B spinner that I'm cleaning up to fish on my Peerless spinning rod.

Around the spools is a felt-like material that, i guess, is used to eliminate scraping while spinning. Feels like felt, but I don't think it is. It's coming off on one spool, but I think I can re-glue. It's completely gone on the other spool. Any suggestions on how to replace? Pipe cleaner? Thin strip of hide of some kind?

Paul H. Young "Salyer" model. Young's smallest spinning rod. Named after John Clark Salyer II, the "father" of the U.S. National Wildlife Refuge system.

Given small supply and relatively low demand, I think it's a bit unrealistic to talk about a "market" for bamboo spinning and baitcasting rods. It's tough enough to figure out fly rods. If I want a Young spinning rod, I want it. Maybe nobody else wants it. If bulldog keeps showing photos of Thomas mahogany bait casting rods, maybe everyone will want one!

People buying and selling is a market. There is even a market for occupation rods. A really weird one though.

That is one beautiful Young Spinning rod. Does it cast as good as it looks?

No; when people buy and sell a good or a service, it's a transaction. A market forms when the pricing of the goods and services is guided by the aggregate interactions of the players. It appeared that you were recording prices to start to determine the presence of a market, but there was no attempt to aggregate the data. To me, it seemed unlikely that the data could be aggregated. Here's an Uslan, there's a Sport King, but with no apparent relationship in pricing, no consistent pattern that denotes market forces at work.

The little Young rod is indeed a lot of fun, using lures I fished decades ago as a boy.

I bought an Arjon cane spinning rod and matched it with my Altex - a perfect match.
While Arjon fly rods don't get a lot of respect, the lightweight spinning rod is excellent.

shoalie, the fuzzy rim inside your spool may be for noize reduction or simply a dust cover.
I would not try pipe cleaner, as it has a wire that could really mess things up.
Maybe fly tying chenille? - which is the same thing without the wire.

That is a very limited notion of market - hich has numerous definitions. You are (generally) correct that a single transaction does not make a market. However, a market is a group of buyers and sellers, where buyers determine the demand and sellers determine the supply of goods or services, together with the means whereby they exchange their goods or services is called the market. Although many markets exist in the traditional sense – such as a physical marketplace (also usually called a "market") – there are various other types of markets and various organizational structures to assist their functions.

Markets of varying types can spontaneously arise whenever parties have interest in a good or service that some other party or parties can provide. There can be a market for cigarettes in a prison, and yet another for contracts for the future delivery of a barrel of oil. A marketPLACE can be organized as an auction, as a private electronic market, as a commodity wholesale market, a flea market as a shopping center, as a complex institution such as a stock market.

There is a "market" for bamboo spinning rods. It exists in such marketplaces as Ebay, Lang's, dealers like Rick's Rods, and your local flea market. Data must be accumulated before marketPRICES can be learned. Market prices are, of course, established by the market. The value of a good or service is "what the market will bear."

Look at Hardy Wanless Spinning rods. We know that five were sold on Ebay during a 120 day period. We know that one rod sold for $ 223.00 plus $67.00 shipping and that. We know that 11 bids ere made to reach that prices. Another sold for $93.41. One sold between those two prices. Two sold at unknown prices (best offer accepted. Thus we can determine as a base THEORY , that a Hardy Wanless is worth between $93.00 and 223.00.

There are Five Hardy Wanless spinning rods available on Ebay today. All except one are within that range. It is listed for about $350.00 with a "buy it now." I believe it is overpriced in the Ebay marketplace. It will either not sell, or it will sell as "best offer accepted" - Probably within our estimated range because many bidders will do as I have done and look at past sales.

BTW, there is a market for bamboo fly rods as well because they are bought an sold. It is much larger than the market for bamboo spinning rods. This board is a marketplace within that total market. I think it is a very influential marketplace that has a huge influence on the rest of the market due, in part, to the listings in the "Classifieds" and the estimated values in the "Rod makers history, value guide and general discussion."

Data concerning past sales leads to an idea or estimate of what value buyers place on goods offered in a marketplace. An accumulation of data from as many marketplaces as possible would give us an idea of the value in the entire market.

Yes, I see where you adapted excerpts from Wikipedia and then added phrases like "Hardy Wanless rods." My public policy students have learned not to do that. I just finished grading their final exams last night, and have no interest in starting to teach a microeconomics course today.
