The committee met yesterday and agreed to further delay the decision on Grayrock for 2021 until 15 April, possibly longer. Many of the considerations justifying last year’s cancelation still exist. We are all anxious to get the show back on the road, however, a Rod Makers Gathering is hardly a critical event, particularly when measured against the potential illness and death that may result from spreading the disease in our group, or the local community.

The three weeks until 15 April is a short time in the history of this pandemic, but the hope is we are on the edge of good news and will begin to see a turn around in the disease spread and relaxation of State restrictions. Immunizations are moving along and metrics are becoming more favorable to relaxing restrictions. With luck continued improvements will provide the confidence needed to move forward with the event.

Grayrock tentatively remains on the schedule for 17 – 20 June. Apologies for the confusion and uncertainty pertaining to lodging and travel plans. We are loath to write the gathering off for a second year but the health and safety of our members and community must take precedence.

In the event the gathering has to be shelved again alternative plans for a virtual event providing presentations and demos via internet are being discussed. If you have suggestions or would like to participate we welcome your input.

Please look for additional information on the Classic Fly Rod Forum, our Facebook Page, or by email. Again apologies for the confusion and delay. Stay healthy and safe.

A review of Michigan COVID guidance this morning looking at the categories our meeting may bump into. As you can see attendance limitations are not favorable to a gathering with more than 25 participants, and travel remains an issue.

Indoor non-residential gatherings

Up to 25 people are allowed; masks and social distancing are required.

Outdoor non-residential gatherings

Up to 300 people are allowed; masks and social distancing are required.

Travel

Avoid travel if at all possible; follow CDC guidance for traveling if travel is necessary.

Entertainment venues

Movie theaters, bowling centers, casinos, auditoriums, and other types of recreation and entertainment venues (see below for the full list) are open for groups of up to 25 people participating in activities together. Overall occupancy must not exceed 50% of normal capacity. Masks and social distancing are required.

Food service establishments

Dining in groups of up to 6 people is allowed. Indoor capacity cannot exceed 50% or 100 persons, whichever is less. Indoor dining is allowed until 11:00 PM. Masks and social distancing are required.

Parks and outdoor recreation

Masks are required at parks or other outdoor recreation areas unless you are not with anyone outside of your household and can remain consistently more than six feet from others.

Capacity limitations

Capacity limits for many types of settings are limited and may include screening for COVID-19; masks and social distancing are required in most situations.

The Board has decided to cancel the 2021 gathering. Michigan’s accelerating COVID infection rate and hospitalizations cannot be ignored and makes planning events into the summer problematic at best. As of yesterday the venue remained available to honor the existing commitment. However, they are not accepting bookings for the foreseeable future and have notified us of rigid expectations pertaining to COVID social distancing, occupancy, mask, and movement in the facility and on the grounds. There is also some questions pertaining to food service. This could change predicated on our State Government and CDC advisories. Clearly the social aspect of the event would suffer, and volunteers to serve as Mask Marshals, and Distance Deputies has not been encouraging. The Board Deeply regrets this action, but based on what we now know prudence dictates we cancel. Hoping to see you all at a Grayrock in the future.
