Cross DB 8'

Here's an 8-footer from my collection. Specs:

8' 3/2
SN: 0971
Wgt: 3 3/4oz
Ferrules: 16/11

Don't know when the numbering started at Cross, so the production year is so far unknown. Note the Montague seat, which was dropped by South Bend in favor of the aluminum Hardy-style screw locking. I find no exact match weightwise in the early Cross catalog but I'm guessing this is a Wet or Dry model, and being marked as a Cross rather than Forsyth or Essex, is doublebuilt. This one has no intermediates and never did, if lack of ghosting is any indication. My revarnish/rewrap followed the original precisely, aided by the original wraps being ghosted in red. Wrapping over the nose of the grip may have been done only on shorter rods; a lovely 7 1/2' Lynn rod I saw was the same. My Lynn-built longer rods (9 and 9 1/2') use small NS winding checks. Note also the lack of progressive guide spacing on the mid and tips.
