2 WT reel suggestions
#1Just ordered a Chris Clemes 2 wt, 7foot, "Black Beauty" bamboo rod.
Any suggestions for a classic fly reel?
I've been a CFO Orvis man most of my life.
I'd like to try something different.
Is there a Hardy that would fit the bill as a 2wt?

Re: 2 WT reel suggestions
#2A Hardy Featherweight is the equal to your CFO and about the same weight.

#5I'll let you know when I receive it.jhuskey wrote:Featherweight or Flyweight. What does your rod weigh Donk93953?
Ordered it yesterday.
Re: 2 WT reel suggestions
#6Not sure what the rod looks like, but here are some other things to consider:
--modern look or classic look? Certain rods seem to look better with certain reels. Even among "classic" rods and reels this can be true. Myself, I find that Vom Hofe s-handle reels really pop on a rod with detailed hardware, fancy signature wraps and intermediates whereas a CFO on the same rod looks a little out of place. So, aesthetics may be a concern...or not depending on your tastes.
--small reels don't have a high retrieval rate...does this matter to you? If so, you might want to opt for a large arbor reel (usually modern looking) or create an "effective large arbor" (slightly larger classic reel with extra backing). I find on very small trout streams that I almost never play a fish off the reel, just strip it in, so it doesn't really matter, but when you do need to wind line...well, ya gotta love 'em to use 'em.
--what kind of materials do you like? what kind of finish?
--consider balance; get the rod first and then see what sort of weight you like (including the line). Might need to borrow some other reels from friends or strap on some weights if you don't have access. Then get a reel that fits this requirement.
--and, of course, cost.

#7Just weighed both reels loaded with backing and line:
Featherweight - 4.5 oz.
Flyweight - 3.4 oz.
Just guessing the Flyweight will balance well a rod under 3 oz.
And forgot about the Hardy St. George Jr., small and classy.

#8All good suggestions but I'll add one more. I like the JLH reels and if you can find one, a JLH 2,3,4 would be really nice on that rod. I have two and like them a lot.

#9JLH (on Pickard Driggs)
The JLH/Sunbeam check is The widest-ranging check of Any Hardy check design
Weighs a bit more, and RHW only, but 2-1/2" prewar Youngs are neat for under 3-oz rods.
(though this thread seems more appropriate on the other forum, where it would receive more traffic, reserving this forum for historic archives - hawking contemporary reels here should be right out)

#10I would suggest a Hardy Baby Bougle or
a Hardy St George Junior reel for a
2 wt rod

Re: 2 WT reel suggestions
#11Or if you can find them a Hardy Bouglé Agate 1 or a Hardy Bouglé Lightweight 1. The first only R hand wind, The Lightweight L or R. Two Gems on a fly-rod, so beautiful with the colored reel-house, Bougle´Agate in racing-green and the Bouglé Lightweight in grey stove-enamel. Both reels has spools in silver with a lovely pattern of ventilation-holes cut as teardrops. One problem though they are rare, extremely rare - made for the japaneese market 2002. All could´nt be sold there so a few were sold in Uk and ? Good hunting ! // Steen

#12I've become a big fan of trout reels with finely adjustable drags. My choice is the little Ross Evolution 0.

#14Marquis 2/3.
I use it on a Leonard 38L 3 wt, which is more like a 2 1/2 wt.
Very functional as well as attractive.

#17Why not show up a little, with a classic english reel in racing-green and silver. Hardy the Tealweight ll ( 2002 it was made ) , a Hardy Lightweight of its own size between a Hardy Lightweight Flyweight and a Hardy Lightweight Featherweight. Size 2 11/16" weight 2,9 oz. A beautiful little fly-reel originaly made for the japanese market, but all could´nt be sold there so some were sold in at least England. There´s a Hardy Tealweight l to its in the same size as a Hardy Flyweight, but colored in racing green with silver-spool. One problem though, its a rare items, probably only made in 250 samples, may be fever for the smallest Hardy Tealweight l. Good hunting ! Ps: The one pictured Is a Golden variant, probably only made in 50 samples. ( differens from the "normal" Hardy The Tealweight : Handle in a woodish material, Champagne-colored foot and spool and details on the back in brass. More good hunting ! Steen
