Re: PHY Texas General
#5Very nice shape, one recently sold for $1475 that had a frayed wrap redone, the grip was lightly sanded and an overcoat of varnish applied by Bob Summers, you may want to contact Bob about having the hook keeper replaced, my estimate is your rod would be valued in the $1700 range with hook keeper replaced, regards.

Re: PHY Texas General
#7Texas General #3836 was last seen by me at auction on eBay in January 2007. This rod was built very late in Paul H. Young's life, probably with assistance from Bob Summers. The "gold" paint lettering is by Paul H. Young. It is very rare for the gold paint not to degrade and turn an ugly color. It erodes away quickly if the varnish above it is disturbed. So it is important to specify that the varnish be left intact if any changes are made. Taking a conservative approach, one might be tempted to touch up varnish losses around the hookkeeper area and leave the overall rod alone, as this is probably the nicest example I've seen of a Young rod with the rather fragile gold lettering still intact.
