ATTENTION - Server and Forum update/upgrade
ATTENTION - Server and Forum update/upgrade
#1Received an email from Dreamhost, our hosting provider, this morning. They are doing a major upgrade of the server software and supporting software on June 10th between 8 AM and 12 Noon.
They are updating PHP, which our forum is based on, along with numerous other programming bundles as wells as the MYSQL database software. Our current version of the forum software does not support this new version of PHP, and since the database version we currently use will be updated, it will need to have the databases massaged so they are compatible with the forum software.
I'm planning on taking the forum down this coming Saturday to update the forum software as well as the database work required, starting at 12 Noon Eastern time. I plan to have it back up fully by 5 PM Eastern time, but if issues and troubleshooting ensue, it may take longer.
You may see the forum pop up occasionally throughout that period, but please don't make any posts until I give the go-ahead in this topic. The forum may or may not be recognizable ast the Classic Flyrod Forum until all the work is done, so please stay off the forum until at least 5 PM unless notified in this topic otherwise.
Thanks,
Mark

#5Really? A preplanned maintainence window? Before the last second?
What kind of sysadmin are you?
Obviously, just kidding. Thanks for the heads up.

#6LOL! I know I'd much rather be standing out on the river getting stymied by smart trout that hacking away at a computer on a nice Saturday afternoon.mer wrote:Really? A preplanned maintainence window? Before the last second?

#9Thanks for the kind words everyone. Keeping my fingers crossed this will all go smoothly. There's a lot of little things that need to be attended to, and if not done right can cause problems.

#11Well gang, things didn't quite go as planned. I need to coordinate some more things with Dreamhost to make the upgrade work.
I need to have both versions of php, the old and the new on the server in order to be able to make the upgrade and then have it work when the upgrade is finished. Hopefully, Dreamhost can have both residing on the server so that it will work for us.
Plan on next Saturday, June 6th, for the next try at the upgrade.

#12Very little that is important and worth doing, goes exactly right the first time. Yeah - that, too as I recall...

Good luck on the upgrade and all you do. I don't most users really understand all the sys admins do. Thanks for your dedication!

#15Too bad it didn't work, but at least you verified the backup and rollback procedures work.
Re: ATTENTION - Server and Forum update/upgrade
#17Yeah, databases are a pain in the butt for sure. It's too bad they're making such a big jump between versions of the php software. That is the big problem. I need the current version of php to make the upgrade, but need the new version to run the forum once the upgrade is done. I'm sure we'll come up with some kind of workaround to get there though.mer wrote:Too bad it didn't work, but at least you verified the backup and rollback procedures work.
Definitely would have rather been out on the water yesterday though after all that work and frustration.
Thanks for all the kind works folks.
