pre-fire Leonard 36 and 38 1/2
#1I would like to know when each of these two 7 1/2’ three piece rods was first listed in a Leonard catalog. I know that no 7 1/2’ rods were listed in the 1922 catalog. If someone out there has a copy of a 1923 or 1924 catalog that would be great. If either the 38 1/2 or the 36 is listed if you could reply with the specs on those rods that would be great. Thanks in advance. Jed

I think we had this discussion when we were in Roscoe a couple of years ago, didn't we?
The Model 36 is in the 1923 Mills & Son catalog (There wasn't a Leonard catalog at that time). It was listed in the category of "Regular Catskill Rods" 7.5' as a 3-piece rod, weight 2-1/2 to 3 oz for $45.00.
The Model 38-1/2 was not listed until the 1927 Mills & Son "Spring Booklet", under the category of Fairy Catskill rods, as a 3-piece rod, weight 2-1/4 to 2-3/4 oz for $50.00.

#3Yes Rupert we did. I just couldn’t remember when each of the two rods first were presented in the catalogs. I didn’t realize you had the Mills catalogs from 23 to 27. I had also forgotten that these were Mills Catalogs and not Leonard Catalogs. I thought the Mills designation came off the butt cap in 1925. When did the catalogs become “Leonard”? Anyway if the 36 is first featured in 1923 then given the butt cap on my rod it would have been made either in 1923 or 1924. The weight of the rod 3.15 ounces and the year of production would place it as a Leonard 36. Thanks for reminding me of the dates. Blessings, and I hope you are well. Jed

To my knowledge, Leonard didn't issue catalogs until the early 1970s. The last Mills & Son catalog was issued in 1971, and although many of the Leonard catalogs aren't dated, what-I-believe is their first one says "the prices quoted are effective January 1, 1972."
All is well here. And, I hope you and yours fared well through the overnight storm.
