Horrocks-Ibbotson Catalog Thread. Yes? No?
#1I'm thinking of creating a Horrocks-Ibbotson Catalog thread, basically like I did for Heddon, Shakespeare and South Bend. Just curious if there's enough interest to warrant it. It wouldn't initially be as complete as the other two threads, as H-I catalogs prior to WWII are really tough to locate, but would cover many of the years from 1905 (actually Clark-Horrocks Co.) to 1935 and would be complete from about 1938-1954. Just fishing for feedback here. Thanks.

#2Hello Mark,
I don't have any HI rods and may never own one, but I encourage you to post them. You have been so generous and I for one (of many) appreciate you sharing your knowledge and resources.
Stay safe,
Joe

#3I think it is an excellent idea.

#5+1 for the idea
There's no master rod maker's name to connect with the marque but they came up with some interesting rods early on, even before George Clark died, and it wouldn't surprise me if they outsold all the other factories in the two-piece rod category during the years they were in production. I say they're overdue for inclusion in the catalog posts.

#8Hi Mark, I have a few catalogs and way to many H&I rods, reels, etc. (my wife says it time to stop collecting). But if I can help with anything let me know. I think you have my email address.

#9Mark, I've owned and restored quite a few and it would be great to pin point production dates of these rods and understand rod fittings and furnishings used, like guide wrap colors etc. Posting the catalogs would be very helpful. I say go for it.

#13Hope it gets approved. I own a Tonka Queen and a Prince, I like both rods, the Queen is especially nice taper.

#14I live just less than 20 miles from the old H-I factory and have owned a few rods over the years. A gentleman that I buy components from has a fair knowledge base regarding the company and recently told me that some of the "special order" rods were built one at a time by their most skilled craftsmen and were on par with the best rods of the day. He showed me bundles of butts, mids, and tips that he acquired when they shut down. His nymph rod is made from those blanks and is Very nice.
Yes, they produced copious amounts of low quality rods for the "average Joe" to be able to get one in his hand and for that have gotten a lot of negative press but they also produced some rods that blind tested would shock you.
I think your catalog thread is a Great idea and will possibly erase some of the less than favorable reviews. They were after all part of the fishing history and heritage from where we've come?

#15Mark approved the project. Thanks again, Mark. I'll start sometime this week, as being held in captivity has given me nothing but time. This will be an on-going project and I would certainly appreciate photo scans from anyone who has some of the early catalogs, which can be nearly impossible to find with any regularity. Thanks for the feedback. As stated above, some of these catalogs will erase the myth that H-I only made low-end stuff.

#18Mark,
Isn't this like asking a kid if he wants ice cream?
Great idea, looking forward to it.
