I have a guess. If it’s on the same flat and right below the stripping guide, that’s where some of the Lynne made SNs were, but as we know everything after 2500 was made at SB. So I think it’s earlier than the others, within a year or two of the move to SB. Before the change in numbering occurred.
What’s the ferrule size?

#22Hi Guys, OK,The numbers are over lumpy varnish; Tip -.072, 1 inch above male ferrule .185, at the male ferrule .195. Butt- below female ferrule .209, above the grip .290. So, I noticed a slight swell at male ferrule that amounted to .010 in one inch. Interesting....... So, a 13/64's ferrule, but 12/64's an inch above the male ferrule. Pretty good step, I think.......

#23I've been getting a lot from this thread so to borrow a quote from the great Art Baker: "you asked for it".Woodlakejag wrote: ↑09/10/20 07:33I’ll check my references tonight and update this post, but my opinion of the 1500 serial numbers is that they are unique to the model and don’t line up with other Cross/SB serial numbers.
I have a 1500 with SN 46947 that I believe is very early SB. 1926-1930. It is currently out for a tune-up, but I would be interested in knowing what other people have in regards to ferrule size, markings, and actual rod weight.
The serial number on my Cross 1500 is 47956. It is 7ft 6in, size 13 ferrule and weighs 4.55 oz. Although marked for HDH or E I find it best with a WF6 line. The rod could be on the heavy side since it comes with a half wells grip. Its sorta like a C grip maybe in Pete's catalog but hard to tell since I can't make out all the writing in the catalog photo. It also has an all metal downlock reel seat. So it looks like a non-standard 1500, which might explain why I was able to steal it in an online auction even with its pristine condition.

#24The Style C grip in the catalog is described as 5 1/8" x 1 1/8".

#25Thank you, mine's 6 inches exactly, close but no cigar. I'm pretty sure its original because the way it looks it may have been lawn cast only but if it was fished they sure didn't catch anything.
Re: Serial Numbered Cross 1500 4711xx?
#26Interesting discussion. For what it's worth, my 1500 is a 7 1/2-foot rod, and the serial number is 4711130 -- an extra 1. It also has the 13/64 ferrule. The tube label lists it as 3 3/4 oz., but it actually weighs slightly less, 3.7 oz.
Re: Serial Numbered Cross 1500 4711xx?
#28Should have mentioned this before but the rod tube label on mine has the weight marked 3 3/4oz also but rod itself tips the scale at over 4.5. Could be whoever filled the label didn't check the rod with its heavier than normal seat.
Re: Serial Numbered Cross 1500 4711xx?
#29My 7’6” says 3 3/4 as well and is exactly 3.77 oz. just additional information.

#30snorider,
Checked my records and found the info on a 7 1/2' SB 1500 I repaired in 2017. Had to scarf one of the tips. The serial # was 4711220, and it weighed 3.79 ounces with one tip and 3.84 ounces with the other. Labeled HDH or E, and I found it casts beautifully with a Cortland wt fwd 6 (168 grains) or a DT silk line (156 grains). 13/64 ferrule and all cork reelseat with N/S slidebands, aluminum butt plate.
