What's your favorite bamboo rod?

Re: What's your favorite bamboo rod?
#21I have an Edwards built Shakespeare 1312T that will be dismissed by some as a production trade rod but is a beautifully constructed rod with quality ferrules and having been fished hard for nearing 20 years now remains straight and solid. I had to replace the mid female and tip male ferrules and the 8-1/2' rod is now 8'-5" but is light in hand and is by far the best "do it all" rod for me. Mild swelled butt and fine tips and a very crisp action suits me fine. Retains all original wraps and guides and still gets it done. I fish it with a 5wt.

#23My favorite is not the rod I use the most or an all arounder but my RD Taylor 24 (7' 4wt) really shows off what a good bamboo rod should do. It is crisp yet delicate and possesses a remarkable amount of hidden power for a rod this light in hand. With a large sweet spot it is easy to get into the rhythm. Quick enough for accurate dry fly fishing and gentle enough not to dry out your wet flies. A wonderful taper in every way.

#24I'm about to find out tomorrow if my new Mike Clark 8' 3/2 Ruby taper 5 weight is my new favorite rod. Sure hope so. San Juan here I come for a very long day trip.

#26Isn't that like asking which kid is your favorite? It can change from day to day, but I love them all.

#30At this time, a 8' 5 wt Winston from 1984...but things could change as soon as another rod comes along.

#32Hopefully it will be the blank I just glued up and will start finishing out today. It's a 7'8" 6wt that should do a lot of things well.

#34Lately, my favorite bamboo fly rod has been an 8 foot 4 weight 2 piece rod made by South Hill Rod Company. Just the right flex to cast delicately, or if it is windy, enough backbone to give it a little oomph!
I previously asked if anyone knew anything about South Hill Rod Co. on the forum, but got no answers at all. If anybody can share any info, I'd appreciate it!

Re: What's your favorite bamboo rod?
#36Easy. My first modern bamboo rod was a Bob Summers 735, recommended by Bob. I caught my first trout on it (in the company of Chauncy Lively and his lovely wife) on a fly I had tied ( a Young fore and aft design) on the North Branch of the Ausable. I also have an 856 (Bob's second recommendation), but here in Vermont the trout run small, being mostly stocked fish. Have always wanted to catch a brook trout on my Great-grandfather's Calcutta bamboo 9'-0" rod, but so far no luck. I also have my wife's Aunt's Edwards Isaak Walton, that would be fun to exercise. The line that came with it, on a Meek 55 reel, was a level 3 weight silk.

#38I have LOTS of favorite bamboo rods.
If I didn't, I wouldn't have and enjoy as many rods as I do!

#40Summers 275. Don't own it any longer, but it was truly a great stick!
