Leonard butt cap markings
#1Does anybody know if either of Mary Kefover Kelley’s books have an illustration of the various Leonard butt cap markings with accompanying dates of use? Having a discussion of them that makes some sense of them would also be great. Thanks, Jed

#2I am looking for a published illustration of Leonard butt cap markings. Does anyone know if either of Mary Kefover Kelley’s two books has an illustrated page of these butt caps?? Has anyone else published a page of them? A discussion about why they exist as they do and why they were changed would also be nice. Thanks, Jed

#3In Mary Kelly's The Originsilof American Angling she has a page of how the stamp changed over the years. When I am back home this weekend I can post a picture.

#4Not Mary Kelly's, but this sketch of Leonard die stamps by Tom Maxwell has been posted and shown in this forum previously.

#8Rob, thanks for posting those. Eventually I want to purchase Mary Kelly’s book. I hope both you and Val are well. I am using your line winder to store one of my silk lines. Does Mary Kelly go into much depth explaining why the change in butt cap stamps?? If she does that will give me even more reason to buy her book.
Be well Rob. Say hi to Val. Jed

#9Jed,
It has been a while since I read it. I do recall she seemed to think dating a Leonard was easy if you were familiar with the catalogs and printed adds. I will do a quick reread and see.
FYI it’s a good book.

#10So I just bought a Duracane brown wrapped with the HL above the Leonard, as in #4 on Maxwell's sketches. He says that's post 1964, but has it as red wrapped. Can anyone enlighten me as to the era?

#11From my notes:
First post-fire stamp used from about 1965 though the early “The University Society” (Midland Park, NJ) ownership. It was later used on the impregnated “Red Wrap” (about 1981 to 1984) and impregnated “Deluxe” (1984) models.

#12Thanks Greg. I take this to mean it was from 1965-1975, more or less. This helps. Much appreciated.
