I've turned into a quad guy (& leaning towards "not 6-sided" rods) which will be obvious after seeing my list…

CURRENT COLLECTION:
QUADS:
- PQM 2-strip, 7', 2/2, 3wt.
- 6' 1/1 custom build 3wt
- Edwards quad #40, 7', 2/2, dt3/4wt
- Edwards quad #42, 7.5', 2/2, 4/5wt
- Edwards quad #50, 8.5', 3/2, 5/6wt
- Edwards quad #25, 8.5", 3/2, 6/7wt
- Edwards quad #35, 9', 3/1, 6/7wt
(a funky "restoration" that needs work)
- Bob Malucci quad, 7.5' 2/2, 4wt "wet fly
PENTAS:
- Sweetwater 7' 2/1, 3wt penta
- Gene Novak 7.5' 2/2, 4wt penta
- Uslan "Spencer" 7.5' 2/2 5wt penta
- Uslan 8' 2/2 6wt penta
HEX:
- AJ Thramer conversion travel rod:
- butt #1- 8.5', 5/6wt
- butt #2- 8', 4/5wt
- Orvis "Nymph" 8' 2/1 4wt
- Monty "Rapidan", 7', 2/1, 5wt
- Edwards/LL Bean "Double L", 9', 3/1, 6wt

- 5, 3-5wt, "banty" rods (Monty/H-I pedigrees) with differing configurations. My work. Some for sale.

TWO RODS I FISH MOST:
- Malucci 7.5' 4wt "wet fly" for nymphing (I do that
most often)
- Edwards quad #42 with a 5wt

ROD I REGRET SELLING:
- A 3wt banty rod that I rebuilt at the same time as another that finished as a 5wt. I used the same thread scheme with both. Both turned out to be great casters and would have made a nice matched set.

3 RODMAKERS I WOULD BUY FROM:
I'm going with build style first, name reputation 2nd...
- Obviously quads from any quality maker.

- Any Edwards rod. I like the whole family.

- 5-strip rods from any quality maker. I just acquired a Uslan and love the basic theory behind the 5strips. It suits my casting style well, too. Another weight would be welcome.

I have a collection of 2, with 1 incoming.

LJ Downes 7613 5wt: This rod is growing on me. Good power in the butt for fighting bigger fish, and can turn over an 18ft leader with a dry dropper no problem.
Thramer 7'6" Signature Hollowbuilt 4wt: Still learning this rod. Slower than the Downes, seems to be more a pure dry fly rod. very delicate presentation. Bends deep into the butt when fighting fish. has a lively feel

Incoming: Jenkins GA70L 3/4wt (really looking forward to this rod)

Potential Wants:
8 to 8'6" 4 or 5wt in 3 piece configuration
Schroeder 4 or 5wt
Bill Blackburn 4 or 5wt
AJ Thramer made Payne 204L

I’ve had a lot of cane rods pass through my hands since I acquired my first. I currently have five.

-Two 7’6” 5 wt rods I built based off a Mark Ruhe “Premier” model rod I once owned.
-Two rods built by Dave Norling who is one of my friends. One is a very early 8’ 5 wt. The other is an 8’6” with tips for a 4, 5, 5.5 & 6 wt lines.
- One Summers 856 with two wet fly and one dry fly tip all take a 6 wt.

I also have a couple graphite rods.

I fish those two Ruhe copies really well. I’m going to request that I be buried with them in case there’s trouting in Valhalla.

I currently have 6 cane rods.

D. Menscer 6'4 2/2 4 weight
Menscer 6'8 2/2 3 weight
Leonard 39H 7'6 2/2 5 weight
Granger Aristocrat 8040 3/2
Orvis Battenkill 8'6 3/2 6 weight
Pennington 7' 2/1 4 weight

The 8040 and Menscer 4 weight are my favorite to cast.

I would love to have Mr. Bolt make me a rod in the future. I also would love to have an Aroner Spring Creek.

I regret giving away two HI rods to friends. Not the prettiest but great casters.

20 rods total for me, 3 of which are bamboo:

Don Schroeder 7’9” 2/2 5 wt
Sharpe’s of Aberdeen 7’6” 2/2 5 wt
John Gow & Sons 12’ split cane salmon rod

I sense a 7’ 4wt in my future for the small streams

From the cellar mancave of Dustnstuff

M.A. Shipley made by EVH Salmon
Walter Scott Trumbull circa 1900 in New Hampshire
M.C. Rod Co. early Montague circa 1895
Fred Devine 1917 # H83
Orvis, Montague made trial piece impregnated by Orvis
Orvis # 8082
George Burtis, Worcester Ma.
William Carter, Bondsville Ma. circa 2004
Montague Gaspe
John Wyman, Norwich Fly Rod Co. Huntington, Ma.
Montague Marked A.W. Bartlett ( Amanda Ward ? Eugene's wife)

Checked out the local Coonamessett River today trying to find a spot
with less brush. Outside of the cranberry bogs, there is very little space to fly fish.
Totally overgrown. Just have to take the fly rod to the beach. No Trout, just Stripers and blues.
Great thread,
Dustnstuff

Small but growing bamboo quiver

W&M Granger 8040 Victory
Granger Special 8642
South Bend 8.5' 346 3/2 HDH or E
9' 3/2 6wt (built by now deceased friend Warren Smith)
Wards Thoroughbred 9' 3/2 (sentimental value)

Used to have quite a few glass rods from the 60's - 70's but sold them all. Only glass left is a 7' 3wt Scott Fibertouch that sees small stream duty for goldens and brookies.

20 graphite sticks.

Ran across this. The mention below about "clear wraps" and Granger rods.

I just set a GC8642 against a Walton Powell Paradise rod of the same length. Tapers are not an exact match. I have compared similar lengths of Grangers to Powell rods before. The Powell had two more guides on the tip and two more on the mid than the GC.

I know the lower end Granger rods had less guides than the higher end. With that said my Powell has 6 snakes and a tip top. A snake almost in the middle of the tip top to 1st snake on a Granger. IF, my memory is correct somewhere out there - is a reference to Walton Powell mentioned that he used more guides to improve casting and...reduce stress on the rods. Not long ago I used a micrometer on an 8' Walton Powell Paradise rod and a Granger 8642 Aristocrat and a W&M Stream & Lake 8642 and...same results. Powell had more guides on the mid and tips than either the Granger Aristocrat or the W&M S&L. And the tips mic'd out across the three closely.

Thoughts?

These are my keepers (for now)

Partridge model 603/4 6' 2/1 3/4 weight
Chubb Montague- calcutta cane? 7' 4/1 pack rod 6 weight
H-I Tonka Queen 7' 9" 2/1 5 weight
Bill Critchfield 7' 9" "stretched" Dickerson 7613 taper 2/2 4 or 5 weight
H-I Featherweight, early model with full intermediates 8' 3/2 4 weight
Heddon Folsom 1515 8' 1 1/2F 3/2 4 weight
Gene Edwards trade rod re-done with no markings 8' 3/1 5 weight
Gene Edwards "Stoddard Special" 8' 3/2 with 1 repaired tip lighter taper than above 4 weight
Chubb Montague "round rod", darkened cane, good quality refinish w/o intermediates, 8" 3" with long tip, 8" with short tip 3/2 3 or 4 weight- full-flex medium wet fly with full-length tip, faster "dry fly" with short tip (so worthless as a collectible, and so excellent as a fishing rod)
Viking trade rod, probably Chubb Montague, 8' 6" 3/1 4 weight
South Bend #346 8 1/2' 3/2 "E or HEH" 5 weight
South Bend model unknown, swelled butt taper 8' 6" 3/2 4 or 5 weight
South Bend model unknown, early model with N/S down-locking reel seat, swelled butt taper 8' 6" 3/2 4 or 5 weight
Montague Rapidan Medium Trout 8' 6" 3/2 7 weight
Heddon Folsom 1525 9' 2 3/4F 3/1 7 or 8 weight

(I'm keeping multiple South Bend rods until more people realize how good their best output really was. The 3 pc. 8 1/2' rods currently sell for less than half of what they're worth, in my opinion. Just don't abuse the ferrules by over-lining them- (and like most vintage production rods, the SB ferrules probably deserve a re-set with modern adhesive if you're going to fish them heavily.) I just saw an 8 1/2' 323 in what looked like mint shape, 3/2, go for around $105, including shipping. Not the lighter line model- this one was for "D or HDH" 5/6 line- but still...an SB 323 or 346 casts as well as any Heddon 8 1/2' or Granger 8642. And the tips aren't as fragile, compared to the Heddon 1 3/4F and Granger 8642, both of which need their tips reinforced with a clear silk thread wrap between the last guide and tip-top if you're actually going to fish with them, imo...oops, did I say that? )

just sold: a Samson 7' 2/1 impregnated for 4 weight, and a 7 1/2' Wes Cooper 2/1 flamed rod for 5 or 6 weight. Maybe I'll get lucky, and the guy won't like them and will return them.

Fiberglass

Berkley Parametric 6' 4"/8" 5/1 for 5 weight UL spin/fly (with enough guides, for once)
Fenwick Feralite FF70-4 7' 4/1 for 4/5 weight (project rod at present, picked up in poor condition except for the blank)
Phillipson Orvis kit rod, 7' 6" 2/1 3 1/8 oz. for 5-6-7 weight
Fenwick FF75-4 7' 6"' 4/1 for 5 weight
Fenwick FF806-4 8' 4/1 for 5 or 6 weight
Hardy JET 9' 2/1 for 5-6-7 weight
