Adrien I took the taper off a rod of a friend who said it was made by Gillum when he was at Orvis. It seems a line lighter than most of the Gillum tapers I have seen for that length. I just find it an amazing casting rod. I do fish every rod in my collection. dave m

Thanks for the info Dave. I know you have half a century or more of experience building and fishing a range of cane rods to compare to this one, so it must be quite a special taper. Hope you get to enjoy it a lot in the season ahead.

Cheers

Oxbow, thanks, and the math has never worked! I am enjoying more fishing these days ... and slowly breaking in some of the collection. The Juan in a week and the Green in 5. Yeah for the beginning of the new fishing season! Ric

Adrien, I am really curious about your collection, especially since you and I have traded so many rods. Still have that twin Spittler? Ric

Ric, nice to see you have a lot of days on the water lined up already, it's what we all wish for. Enjoy all of your great gear, and thanks for sharing some of your new additions with us - there are even more fantastic rods in your collection than before! I don't think the "one in one out" rule is working so well for you :)

Cheers

Hi Ric, I feel really fortunate to have had the opportunity to have handled and fished a nice range of rods, but circumstances and storage have changed and I can't say I have any kind of a "collection" any longer. I have some rods still of course that I fish when I can, and I am incredibly glad when any opportunities (no matter how basic the fishing may be) arise to let me be on the water to enjoy them. If I could I would fish pretty well every day year round, but I'm so far from that it's not even close.

That 71/2 foot Spittler was such a fabulous rod. It found a new owner a couple of years ago, and I am hopeful he / she is as fond of it as I was.

Good fishing to you on the San Juan in some days!

I'm with some of the guys who "don't collect" rods, but don't tell my wife how many have found their way to the back of my closet in the office.

FE Thomas Special Streamer, 8 1/2' 3/2 5 wt
Cross Singlebuilt 1500 7 1/2' 2/2 5 wt
Cross Doublebuilt 266 9' 3/2 6 wt
Phillipson Pacemaker 8' 3/2 5 wt
Phillipson Power Pakt 9' 3/2 7 wt
customized South Bend 59 7' 10" 3/2 6 wt

Newer rod tapers:
Payne 97 7' 2/2 4 wt
Dickerson 7612
Dickerson 8013
Payne 200
Young Perfectionist 7'6" 2/2 4 wt

Love the nuances of each rod but seem to like taking the Phillipsons out the most.
No regrets on what I've sold as each one feeds my desire for a new project these days, or a vintage reel.

One of my favorites. I would describe it as crisp medium fast progressive action rod. At normal distances it flexes into the mid section, but does have reserve power to lay out 60+ft casts. At 3.8 oz it is light weight and a joy to cast/fish.

The only update on our rod collection is that there have been no updates.

We still have the same rods from Chris Carlin, James Reams, Don Schroeder(2), Dave Norling(2), Bellinger (Croco), Bob Nunley and Chris Raine.

You guys are killing me. I sold off a lot of my collection in my old age and have paired it down to just enough to cover most fishing conditions. Then added the Dickerson clone out of sheer want. Don't judge the glass, I love them for the aluminum drift boat as they are tough as nails. I also have a bunch of cool old graphite like the Winston Tom Morgan Favorite, but I know they have no cache.

Cane:
Heddon, #20 Bill Stanley Favorite, 3/2, 8 1/2', #7
Dennis Stone, Dickerson 8014 Clone, 2/2, 8', #6
South Bend, 290, 7 1/2', #6
Thramer, Signature Hollow Built, 2/2, 7'9", #5
Thramer, Payne 98 Clone, 2/1, 7' #4

Glass:
Fenwick, FF858, 8 1/2', #8
Sage, SFL 789, 8'9", #7
Fenwick, FF 85-3 Ferralite, #6
Lamiglas, FL975S, 8', #5
Lamiglas, FF 764, 7 1/2', #4

The Heddon is my coveted rod since I inherited it when my grandfather passed and taught myself to fish with it on the McKenzie behind my house. It's nice to still have the first fly rod you ever held 42 years later. It still gets work at least once a year on the bass pond along with a shot of Wild Turkey in memory of the gentle old giant. My dad had no interest in the outdoors so grandpa is held responsible for my love of fly rods, shotguns, Labradors and whiskey.

Arthur,
That is a most impressive collection! My father is Singaporean and I have been there several times growing up. I hope to bring my own kids (and now bamboo rods) there to meet their great aunts and uncles and cousins. I’ll be knocking on/down your door to view those rods!

Now Let me ask some difficult questions.

Which school or tradition harbours the best tapers?

If you had to rank the classic makers in order of overall quality, what might your list look like?

Adam
