This might not work because
1. some don't find it interesting,
2. some don't dare to post because they have
a) too few rods,
b) too many rods or
c) too valuable rods or
3. because this is not considered as serious by high end collectors (to mix up with us lower folk ;^) )
4. this will be considered as bragging

but at least for me it would be interesting to learn more about

1. your current stock of bamboo rods,
2. two rods you use most
3. one rod that you really regretted to sell
4. three rodmakers you will buy rods from in the future

I'll start at the risk of outing me here as a klutz:

US:
Leonard Catskill 9ft, 3/2, #3/4 (probably 20/30ies vintage, MR)
Leonard 66, 8ft, 2/2 (excellent original prefire)
Hiram Hawes 9ft, 3/2, #5/6 (a must keep rod, great condition; incredible caster; albeit both tips short about 1in)
D. Schroeder Quad, 7ft, 2/2, #4 (great rod, new)
Mike Brooks, 7ft 2", 2/2, #3/4 Green Machine (great friendship present in the form of a green bamboo rod from Mike Brooks)
Heddon 13, 8,5ft, 3/1, #5/6 (in restoration stage for about 5 years now...)
Mystery 7,5 ft rod probably 20ies Montague, #2/3 (great caster)

European:
Walter Brunner "Amabile", 7ft, 2/1, #3/4
Bjarne Fries "The Delight", 7ft, 2/1, #4 (staggered ferrule)
Hans Schlecht:
"Ontario", 7ft 9", 2/1, #3/4
"Hobgoblin", 8ft, 2/1, #4/5
"Para 856", 8ft, 2/1, #5/6
"Para 934", 9ft 3", 3/1, #3/4 (3.95oz!!!)
Pezon et Michel Fario Club 8ft 5", 2/2, #5/6

the two I use most often:

1. Brunner Amabile
2. Hans Schlecht Hobgoblin

The one I regretted to sell:
7ft Granger Victory 2/2 in exc++

Rodmakers:
more Schlecht rods, Brandin, Summers

Have fun!

My cane is hardly a collection. Yet. I have my grandfather's two bamboo rods. A Wright and McGill Granger Favorite, and an Edwards quadrate with one messed up tip. They belonged to a grandfather who died well before my folks met and are priceless to me. I do hope to add to the collection when I have some money; after I get tires, and a new reel, and pay off the credit card, and...

J. D. Wagner Para 15 rubbed finish, 1-tip
J. C. Zimny 7' for a 4
Orvis Flea 6 1/2' for a 4
Orvis Mity-Mite 5' for a 4/5

Here goes...
9'6" 2/1 6wt J.S Sharpe Scottie" in original condition and a cannon!!
- 9' 2/1 6wt J.S. Sharpe "Scottie" I refinished two years ago. (my favorite rod with a 3 5/8" Perfect)
- Hardy Gold Medal 9' 7wt? 3/2 in good condition. Excellent grilse rod but a "ball-buster" to throw all day(steel core)
Another Gold medal in poor but may someday be brought back.
-Heddon 17 black beauty. 3/2 7wt needs some tlc but nice as is.
Montague "Flash" 3/2 all original.
- H-I "Spinner" 9' 3/2 6wt? I like this one for big trout.
- Numerous non-descript english Salmon rods.
-Milwards 9 1/2' 3/2 salmon rod that is slow as hell but you can feel a salmon right down to your toes. Love it.
13' VL&A spey 3/2 Heavy but a lot of fun. Its in the hospital at the moment.
10 or so Japanese rods
About the same number of Cheap 'Sure Strike, etc" mass produced rods.

One i regret is the 6'6" 3/2 Rocky mountain i sold to caneseeker. It need alot of work and i was not up to the job.
Marc sure brought it back though....awesome restoration!

A certain rod building board member has a salmon/steelhead rod in the works so perhaps that will be "The One" for me!!!!
As for builders???? Brooks, AJ, and hmmmmm anyone else build the long rods????
Thats my story boys.

Chris Bogart of Shenandoah makes a nice 12.5' 6/7 wt cane spey rod. A very cool tool. I'm building one for myself as we speak from a related taper. I'll post a photo when i have it done.

Per Brandin also makes big rods, but they'll be in the $4K-$5K range.

Hardy too and only a little less.

Is composed by... !-- :rollin --> two rods.

One (the first i own) is a Young Perfectionist clone by Tam&Morales, 7'6' for 4wt.

The other is a RD Taylor 24-4, 7' for 4wt.

The next time i buy a rod, i want buy a 8' for 5 wt.
A flamed rod from Mr Jenkins or a rod from a local rodmaker (T&M or Calviello) will be my choice.

In my dreams dance a lot of rod. From diminutive 3wt to powerful 6wt. Orvis, Young, Winston, Summer and Thramer are the names of rodmakers.

I don´t miss any rod, i never sold one.

Best regards from the far south (Argentina)

Paul

This is fun, if sobering and humbling, thank you, maruoff. I?ll hunker down with the lower middle class collectors, it?s a motley crew of rods:

Goodwin Granger Favorite 8 ½? with one tip down 5? and the other not original
Phillipson PowrPakt 8 ½?
H. R. Sedgewick 7 ½? for 3 ? 4 wt. which I just bought and probably can?t afford to keep
W. E. Edwards Quadrate #40 7? currently in Tim Zietak?s shop
W. E. Edwards Quadrate #425 7? bamboo (scuse me) spinning rod
No name 9? in the bags and tube of a pre-SB Cross 166-S (which would I rather have?)
J. C. Higgins 9? in need of re-wrapping
Montague Lake Pleasant was 9? but its one tip is down 4?

I love the Granger?it seems the most forgiving. Haven?t tried the Edwards #40 yet and can hardly wait.

I?m sort of sorry I sold an 8? Orvis kit rod without ever fishing it. And also regret letting go of a 9? Montague Rapidan because it, like the Granger and the Phillipson, belonged to my grandfather. However it helped pay for the Edwards #40.

Having only modest means and having not yet mortgaged many other valuables?and I do understand that there are many of you inveterate collectors who have given all for your rod collection?I can dream. I?d like to have a Brandin, a Winston, a Zietak?Or I can be realistic. I can aim for saving my money and buying a bigger Phillipson and another 8? Orvis.

Regards, Bill C.

1) Rods:
Paul H. Young Co. Driggs, 7'2", 2/2, by PHY (early '50s)
PHY Co. Martha Marie, 7'6", 2/2, by Summers (1962)
PHY Co. Para 15, 8', 2/2 (2 wet tips), by Summers (about 1966)
R.W. Summers Co. Model 275, 7'6". 2/2, by Summers (1986)
Payne Rod Co., Model 204? - 8-1/2', 3/2, casts a DT6 (date?)
"The B.F. Nichols," H.C. Litchfield & Co., Makers, Boston, Mass. (date?) - about 10', 3/2, wooden rod with flip rings and intermediate wraps. The only rod in the group that is not fished.

2) Rods used most are Summers Model 275 and PHY Co. Martha Marie, in that order. Summers built the 275 for me, and I've always loved fishing with it.

3) No rod sales that I regret. Years ago I traded a nice 3", 3-screw Hardy St. George for a painting, and now I wish I had paid cash for the painting. I'm glad that I bought other old St. Georges back then, and kept them. I should get the B.F. Nichols rod into the hands of someone who would appreciate it. I like it only because artist Winslow Homer owned a Nichols (now in the American Museum of Fly Fishing collection).

4) If I needed another rod, it's pretty obvious that I'd check with Bob Summers. At this point, I think I'd have to want another rod badly enough to be willing to trade one of the rods I now own.

Well, I guess I'm in the slums. You guys have an increbily impressive list of rods.

1. John Keneally "Carabasett" - 6'9" 3/4 wt flamed cane rod (hopefully it will be completed by opening day since I plan to use this rod for small stream and early season fishing).

2. Orvis Battenkill - 7 1/2 ft HDH -> nice casting rod built in 1954 and just recently restored to mint condition by Orvis. I'm still trying to figure out what type of line will work best on it. I wasn't overly impressed w/a 6WF on it so I'll try a 6TT, a 5DT and a 6DT and see what works best.

3. F.E. Thomas Special - 8 1/2 ft -> I know its not the streamer model and it's probably the trout model. I'll find out soon b/c I'm going to have Sante take a look at it next month. Needs some work but when it's done, it will be a truly beautiful rod.

7ft Jenkins, Payne 204, 7'6 Battenkill, 7'6" Wes Jordan, 9ft Edwards Quad, 8ft 3pc Uslan, 8ft 2pc Uslan, 7'6 Martha Marie taper, 8'6 cascade (horrocks) Orvis Mitey Mite, 6'6 Orvis deluxe, rare 7'9 orvis nymph, (superfine taper staggered ferrule, confirmed by Orvis)

I really wish I kept the Orvis Nymph.

No way will I list my rods!!!!! Did my wife put you guys up to this? At this point she's not sure and I'm not telling, she wanders into my shop and thinks the rods she sees belong to someone else and I'm going to keep it that way.

Dear Maruoff,

I don't have a collection as much as I have a bunch of rods with which I enjoy fishing.

South Bend 290 7'6"
South Bend 24 9'0"
South Bend 323 8'6"
South Bend 346 8'6"
South Bend 359 8'6"

Heddon 17 8'6"

Montague Rapidan 9'0"

Granger Victory 9050 9'0"

Edwards Bristol F-18 9'0"

I'm a blue collar guy, a bum actually, who fishes with rods that I suspect I might have owned had I been born 40 years earlier.

The two I would not want to be without are the South Bend 290 and the South Bend 359. They can do all of the trout fishing I can get myself into.

Regards,
Tim Murphy aka Goobs

PAYNE&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 103&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 8'
SOEFFKER&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp GARRISON 212 Taper 8'

I fish the Edmonds 3/2 version of the Perfectionist all the time as well as the Paul Young built original and the Ruhe Premier. The R D Taylor parabolic is way cool and I fish it on a couple of streams. Later in the season the 38-H gets some action. In the Catskills, the Schroeder with a 6DT. All in all, about 8 - 12 rods get fished each year, and all get cast on dry land.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp
I have no "needs" but would like one or two more of P H Young, Brandin, Taylor and another Payne.

Regrets? My second rod, an 8' Edwards trade rod for 6 weight. An absolutely perfect 8' Battenkill, roll casting machine, and a 7 1/2' Battenkill and a 7 1/2 foot Manchester. These were rods I fished to death and they hardly showed any signs of use. I would like to have back a 7 1/2' Jenkins I didn't stick with. But all my sales eventually led to a nice group of rods that cast well and fish well.
