#5Besides the obvious wow factor, notice there are intermediate wraps as well...

#6I don't mind having something to aspire to, but that is way over the top. A really beautiful and amazing piece of work.

#8Very Cool rod. It might be the only rod in existence in which the owner would be worried about breaking the butt section rather than a tip.

#11I thought my Gnome Companion Rod was mix and match. That's in a different world. Yeah, funny about breaking the butt and what you're left with.

#13Considering it's down four butts and three mid-sections, maybe I could get a good price? I'd love to be able to claim a spartan attitude for once...

#14Yes, I agree, there was only one Gus Nevros.
Gus was very proud of this rod. He even went to the extent of publishing a colored hand out sheet about it. Not only was he a fantastic rod builder, but a very astute and exploring rod designer. The cosmetics of any of his rods were perfection. You might notice the three intermediates between each point are exactly placed and as you move up into the tip he reduces the number of thread wraps in each intermediate to keep an even balance to a the rod appearance. Just above the grip he places a single thread wrap! Closely looking at one of his rods is a lesson in the art of building a rod. There are some well known rod makers today whose rods reflect and/or copy some of Gus's details.
I own two of his rods (a sweet 7'6" hex 2/2 5WT and a smooth powerful 8'6" penta 3/4 (2 mids & tips) 5/6WT) and have had three pass through the shop for sale (Gus made just about 300 rods in his life). Nevros was a master, unfortunately never written about to any extent and therefore to those who believe being published is important and adds value to a rod makers status, vastly unappreciated. Those of us who knew Gus, listened to him go on about rods and consider him one of the the historical significant builders. Most of all his undying love for his wife Ruth, ethics, kindness and professionalism made one come away from being with him feeling they could/should be a better person as they live their lives.
If you can get one of his rods, at least to look at, they are treasures.
Best,
Carl @ Wanigas Rod Company

#15Like Carl I'm fortunate to have known Gus. Gus built more than one walnut cased "One of One" multi piece, multi line wt rod. Each was unique in the number of pieces, lengths, line wt., etc. Carl mentioned the colored handout about this rod. I've attached a copy of another "One of One" handout below.

#16I think every rod maker ought to set aside time to build something like this....a special build that stretches their skills and adds complexity and attention that normal rods wouldn't
it's nice that T&T does special editions and auctions them off for charities every few years (I've posted pictures on this forum)
there are multiple 'build-offs' in the motorcycle and custom car world every year, but really only one in the bamboo world (Henry's Fork gathering). Events like these keep the excitement in the industry, inspires new builders, helps to share historical knowledge and experience while most importantly moving things forward.
The elder statesmen of the bamboo rod world, whoever they may be, ought to hold an annual rod building contest and then get the major fly fishing magazines to write a story every year to cover it (Fly Fisherman, American Angling, Fly Rod & Reel et al). Orvis and Simms I'm sure would be happy to sponsor it with prize money. This forum could hold one.
something to think about

#17I agree norcal, its really not about the competitive part more the pushing the envelope[artistically, performance, ect] Custom bike buildoffs stretch the builders thought process and benefits the whole industry. Would really be cool to see some of the talented makers from this forum have 60 days to create something special and then get voted on by members with all rods being auctioned off for a good cause.

#18Man i miss him!!
He was one of the kindest and most knowledgeable rod makers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. The greek writing was always one of my favorite of his personal touches to a rod.

#19I just came across this thread again and feel it’s worth resurrecting. I never met Gus, but did communicate a bit with him and he was the ultimate gentleman and a truly gifted craftsman. His rods are exceptional, as these attest.
