Reel for SB 346-9

#1

Post by richmich »

I just acquired a SB 346 9' rod and would like to pair it with a vintage SB manual reel. The reel seat seems different from all the 346 pictures I see in this forum. It is an all chrome color seat. The rod was refinished so maybe the seat is not original. An OREN-A-MATIC 1140D fits the seat, but not an SB 1122A reel I have, the reel feet are a bit too thich and long.
Any suggestions on an SB Manual reel that might fit?

An 1144 would probably not fit if an 1122 did not. Possibly a Medalist?

Based upon the photo, I believe that a 1144 will fit. I no longer have mine, but have an 1133 and certainly the length would fit based upon the photo. What was the issue with the 1122? They had two versions of these, but I've never owned one, so can't add much regarding the differences.

Similar reel seat on a 9-foot South Bend #12. The reel is a South Bend 1185 made by Shakespeare.
Actually, mine is a sliding band seat, so maybe it wouldn't fit. But I used an Orvis Madison on the SB 57, and I think its foot was about the same thickness as an 1144.

The issue is the foot is too thick with a too flat curve and very slightly too long.

Would I dare grind on the foot to thin and shape it to fit?

Yeah, it's not like it's a Hardy or anything.

A user 1144 will run you about $25, grind away!

FYI: Neither an SB 1133 nor 1144 will fit... foot too thick... an SB 1110 does work... I did find a Martin Classic MC78 and a Martin 63SS that also fit fine.

Is the reel seat marked South Bend Bait Company? I was thinking that I might pick up such a reel seat, but was planning to pair with a SB 1133. Thanks!
Cheers,
Joe

I had a SB76 with a seat like that and had the same problem with SB reels. I did grind one to fit; worked fine.
I spent most of my money on shotguns, fly rods, guitars and banjos. The rest I just wasted. (Apologies to W.C. Fields)

Here is your SB reel seat with two SB reels fitted. The black reel is a No. 1110, the green reel is a No. 1120. Both reel feet fit, but the No. 1110 fits better, as it is slightly thinner. If interested in either reel, PM me.
