Rocky Streams? Rugged? (Photo Heavy)
#1Recently someone asked me if all of the streams in Montana were rocky. Well.....I said most and most are rugged. But I also said it's worth the risk. Here is a sample of a stream I fished yesterday. Rocky? Rugged? You tell me. Oh, and check out my fishing partner for the day. She wouldn't leave me the entire time. She just stayed one pool ahead of me all afternoon as if to show me the way. Fun!

#4I pointed out a Dipper to my son last week on the St Joe (did you say ROCKY?). Always one of my personal favorite birds seen while fishing.

#8Ousels gotta love em they are my favorite Montana bird. That's a "heck" of a nice creek.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it. T.R.

#12I had the same friend fussing because I invaded her pool...in Rocky Mountain National Park. Is her name “American Dipper”? She sure can travel.

#13Wow Mark! Nice stream! I imagine it would not be easy getting out of there with a twisted a lot knee. When you do wade and/or cast from the stream, is it difficult to find your footing (always balancing on top of rocks) or are there some flat/gravel spots?

#14Mark sets up a tripod before attempting a cast. I refer you to his thread on wading staffs .
Mine should arrive tomorrow!

#15As a resident of Her Majety's colonies, I have to add that the name of your "American Dipper" is the Water Ouzel. I say!
I'm jealous that you have one of those cute sidekicks in the Summer as I only have the entertainment of their bob-bob-bobbing in the Winter. They seem to like the safety of a human nearby because they often fly to the closest boulder, close their eyes, and nap while I fish.

#16John Muir wrote about them. I often see them when fishing and they will hang around for a fair piece of stream. I love watching them and having them as company.Hellmtflies wrote: ↑08/04/20 08:54True, a Dipper. I see them all the time. But they don't often stay with me all day. Here are a couple of photos of one of their nests.

#18Very snazzy outfit. A few years ago I would have been up for a stream like that but now, alas, it is a matter of no country for old men.
