A different rod(at least for me) :)

#1

Post by jan96 »

My main hobby is making bamboo rods and fishing with them. This is not an ordinary hobby - it's an addiction! I hate to make rods look always the same so I experiment constantly. Building rods with different tapers is a normal thing, different lengths, line weights, number of pieces, joints of metal or bamboo,..etc..
This is one of my experiments, a rod built with Madake bamboo, nodeless construction, aluminum ferrules, stacked cork handle, reel seat with hidden metal ring in the cork, stainless snake guides - stripping guide included. Rod is glued with UHU epoxy and "varnished" with polyurethane glue.

Very nicely executed. The cosmetics are spot-on beautiful and I'll bet it fishes real nice too. Also, thank you for providing pictures of
some of your steps. This kind of post continues to make it worthwhile to visit this site.

Truly a lovely piece of rodmaking! How did the aluminum ferrules work out? I always thought the material was not well suited to ferruling due to it's softness.

I am guessing by your icon you are a luthier by trade? I just fished with a guitar maker on Friday. He does not fish bamboo yet, but I'll bet he will!

Question - The guides are glued to the blank, no wraps?

Stunning....and the reel seat is a head turner. Have you had any issues with the cork flaking at the hidden portion? It makes the reel look as if it's levitating in the back end. Inspiring rod.

They are wrapped with white silk thread which goes transparent after varnish is applied.

Ferrules are made from aluminum alloy tubings(actually Easton arrow shafts) and have to be greased before assembling.
I made some hobby guitars, but I'm not a luthier :)

Metal ring, 12mm long is secured on a piece of texolit, an artificial material, quite hard. Textolit, turned to right diameter is glued to the bamboo, metal ring to textolit and all covered with cork. So, the ring can't move much and lift the cork

Looks like some type of bakelite or catalin phenolic resin?

I used this material because I had a piece on hand and because it is waterproof. I could use something else, another plastic or Aluminum.. "Tekstolit" is a commercial name, it is basically a (cotton)cloth impregnated with bakelite and shaped to bars or plates.(info. internet)
When I built my first binder in 1996/97 I used textolite plates, I was convinced it would be better than wood..

Here's another "different" - weirder rod than the previous one... ;) 7'6''-8'3''#5 in six piece configuration, "reversed - sleeve" bamboo ferrules, flamed stainless steel snake guides, champagne cork grip(not very good, I know..), cork reel seat with "thermo color change rings" I got from my daughter..
