#21I believe that Rush River sells a 13/12 stepdown. I recall using it for this taper.
Re: Dickerson 7612 ferrules
#22Jim, when did you last buy those? I've heard that before but all I've ever seen on their website is standard ferrules and I just went there and looked and it's the same. They're my go-to for standard ferrules.jim royston wrote: ↑10/25/21 08:47I believe that Rush River sells a 13/12 stepdown. I recall using it for this taper.

#23Would you fit this with a 12 or 13? I wonder what subtle differences, if any, would be noticeable if the male station is built up to accommodate the Super Z? Might be an interesting comparison.

#24It's been a long time. Maybe when Dave bought the company, he discontinued them. They were only available in that one size.
Re: Dickerson 7612 ferrules
#25They show up in the size pop-up menu.jim royston wrote: ↑10/25/21 12:21It's been a long time. Maybe when Dave bought the company, he discontinued them. They were only available in that one size.

#27I also once owned a 7612 from 1948. I always felt it was a 4 wt. rod, but had one heck of a time finding the 'right' line. Finally gave up and sold it.spruce grouse wrote: ↑10/24/21 08:02I have an original 7612 from 1948. It is a 4 wt. but in no way is it fast. It isn’t a 7613 “lite”.

I would build the 7612 to a 12/64 ferrule. I am sure there would be a difference in action. I am not into exact reproductions and the Dickerson tapers with Super Z ferrules are fantastic casting rods, so it works for me
Edit - quotes the wrong person in my reply

Re: Dickerson 7612 ferrules
#30I originated the design 20 years ago when I was making a lot of Dickerson taper rods. I make them in all sizes.
The idea is I make the butt a Swiss type ferrule in a given size, 13/64 for eg and the tip is a Swiss style male in say 12/64.
The male just fits the female in exactly the same way as if you were just using Swiss style ferrules and as far as fitting to the rod is concerned they're done in exactly the same manner as fitting Swiss style ferrules.
My ferrules are made using Nickle Aluminium Bronze. At least 10% stronger and about 15% lighter than NS too.

Re: Dickerson 7612 ferrules
#31And that's a huge advantage, Tony. They're so much more straight forward to fit and you can stay true to any drop in the tip dimension. I still have two set of your ferrules in size 14/13 that I'm going to build at least one 7613 with. I'm only into reproductions to the extent that I'm trying to see what the fuss is about with classic tapers- to the extent that these published numbers are anywhere close to those classic tapers, that is.avyoung wrote: ↑10/26/21 02:42I originated the design 20 years ago when I was making a lot of Dickerson taper rods. #32If you go to the Rush River Rods website and look under nickel silver ferrules.....then look under "Super Z 3 Piece Set.3creeks wrote: ↑10/25/21 09:24Jim, when did you last buy those? Under the drop down menu for ferrule sizes there is the 12-13/64th ferrule set.

#33Thanks, Brian. I actually went to their site last night and saw that.BGreer wrote: ↑10/26/21 08:59If you go to the Rush River Rods website and look under nickel silver ferrules.....then look under "Super Z 3 Piece Set.3creeks wrote: ↑10/25/21 09:24Jim, when did you last buy those? #34+1 for using Tony Young step downs. I built out a 7612 blank a few years ago that Gary Williams in TN built for me, and Tony's step downs were the perfect match. My 7612 is a fast 4 wt and a favorite on the stream. David
