I made this rod as a gift for a good friend of mine. Maybe I should say that we made it together. His job was to make all the hardware.. ferrules, reelseat, tube. I did the rest.... ;)

He lives just a few meters from the river Vipava in western Slovenia, so we decided to give a name to the rod after "his" river.. The rod is 7'6''#5/6 3/1, made with the modified Garrison 209E taper.

That reelseat is a great match to the color of the bamboo - well done! I like the looks of that rod, including the sparkly wraps, which i never thought would look right on bamboo - wrong again! They look like the night sky.

Fascinating and remarkably creative! I can imagine it is also painstaking to craft and a tremendous amount of work. Congratulations on having such skill.

Made my first blank last week while taking the rodmaking class at CFFCM. Still working on finishing it with grip, seat and guides.

The second rod I made in this blessed life. The best quality I could make in my fledgling enterprise. I was so surprised that even THIS got me a request to actually make a bamboo rod for a neighbor! She has never cast a bamboo rod before but was totally awed by the accuracy and lightness of this one.
Facts: 7' 0'' 4wt 2/1. Scott Nilsson taper. Reel seat hardware by Ray Lee. Snake brand guides, winging check & tip top. Rush River Rods ferrules, Agate stripper by ? (part of bulk purchase...). Gudebrod silk wraps. Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane hand applied finish.
Casts a #5 or #6 WF line way out to THERE, and straight and true...

The short story is that the bamboo came from a fellow rod maker that is suffering from Parkinson's and no longer builds. Amongst all that I obtained from him was a glued up butt (not finished) and several planed tip strips. I was able to sort the tip strips and found all the matching pieces for hex and finished them to Scotts taper as well as finished the butt to match. Hence, the signature includes the 'DSCC (Don Smith Cane Craft) Ross Commem. 7/15' to honor Roy Ross' contribution to the craft and his help in tooling up my company.

I promise I'll do better next time...

Very nice. I really like the rattan grip with the mortise butt! A style that could be seen back in the late 1800's.

Styling rod there Bambookill. Not a minimalist rod by a long shot, and yet it's very refined and elegant. Nice job.

I got quite inspired by the Heddon Featherweight thread and built the taper as a Black Beauty. 7' 4wt , swelled butt. The best thing on the rod is the reel seat done by Ray Lee, it has the delren butt cap and the tiny cork check. I have pictures posted of my rod with the featherweight I copied.
