Rust elimination/prevention on planing forms
#1I live in a humid area and my final forms develop surface rust between rods. What’s the best way to remove rust and prevent/reduce this?
Thanks

#2I use Boeshield. It is a lubricant/ rust preventer used on bicycle chains. It comes in a spray can. It does leave a waxy residue that must be cleaned off the form before you use it the next time, but it works well.

#3+1 on the Boeshield T9. That's the last thing I do to a Planing Form before I pack it up for shipping.

#5The guys are right. I use Boeshield on my car--great stuff. It's labelled for broad usage, including tools like table saws. It's wax in petroleum distillate, you can use lacquer thinner to clean the forms before next use.

#6To remove Boeshield I just dampen a rag slightly with paint thinner.
It doesn't take much thinner. it's really only necessary to get it out of the v-groove
so you don't contaminate the cane to interfere with the glue joint.

Thanks for this. One last question- Do you disassemble the forms to spray the Boeshield?

#9Phil,
You should not need to disassemble the form and I would not recommend it.
If you need to just squirt a little down between the bars occasionally to keep rust
at bay.

#10Thanks everyone. Larry, I did not disassemble.
I think the best remedy is just to build more rods faster.

#11Well I have always said that the best way to keep your Form from rusting is to Use Them.

Re: Rust elimination/prevention on planing forms
#12When I lived in Northern California along the coast, I had terrible time with any bare metal surfaces to rust. I tried all the stuff suggested, but ended up to just keeping the shop heated. On my lathe and milling machine bed and tooling, I would slather all sorts of recommended solutions. If the shop was cold and I turned on the heat, the metal surfaces would sweat until the temp came up to evaporate the moisture. It was always a battle. I ended up just keeping the shop warm and wiping all bare metal down with WD-40. I was glad to move to New Mexico at 7000 feet with low humidity, so my problem went away.

#14The best use for WD-40 was "back in them old timey days" when, if you hit a water puddle too hard with your car, water would splash up and get under your distributor cap and short things out; bringing the car to a dead stop! AND IT WOULD NOT START! You raised the hood, removed the distributor cap and thoroughly sprayed the interior with WD-40. Voila', you were off and running in no time. Been there, done that a time or two!
Re: Rust elimination/prevention on planing forms
#16I’ve applied Boeshield to the forms. For the last month there’s been no indication of rust and some previously rusted spots have diminished.
Thanks!
