Southbend 47 Restore

#1

Post by esimko2021 »

Hi Folks...
47
I am in currently restoring a Southbend 47 and 59 Bamboo rods. Both are in fairly decent shape. Needs all new wraps and a few guides. Reel seat though plastic, is good and the handles/grips just needs cleaning. I would like to restore them to fishing shape and give it a try here in Arizona. I would like to restore it to its look back in the day. Is there anyone that might have the spec sheet/build sheet for these rods? Thanks

Not being certain what it is specifically you are seeking from a "spec" sheet, I recommend that you use the "search" function here for specifically what you are looking for on these rods. Rod "spec sheets" are typically their printed descriptions in the maker's catalogs. The only thing I can think of that you might be seeking is wrap thread colors as guide replacement is rather straight forward. If you plan to fish these rods, their casting "qualities" can typically be improved by increasing the number of snake guides above what the factory put on them. This means relocating the position of the existing guides. There are any number of "guide spacing " charts that will get you started. Just remember THEY ARE APPROXIMATIONS ONLY for placement. There is a simple "curve" test that you use to establish FINAL guide placement. There also is a "Rule of Thumb" for the proper number of guides; but, once again, it is NOT cast in stone. The rule is: One guide per foot of rod length, including the stripping guide; but, excluding the tip-top. Thus, the "typical" guide count for an 8ft rod is 9. However, one periodically encounters the 8ft rod that "performs" best with 10 guides, etc. The "curve" test (it is actually a deflection test) will reveal this difference.

You have a PM.

The believe the information you are seeking is in Michael Sinclair’s bamboo rod restoration handbook. Copies show up pretty regularly on the classifieds. You can post a WTB they typically go for about $50. If you think this is the only restoration and you don’t need the book, I can post the info you need let me know - thread specs or whatever - if somebody else doesn’t provide the info off the top of their head.

Ok - will post thread colors and any other relevant info.

The guide spacing you probably want to work out yourself as the original rods usually had too few guides. On a 9 ft rod I would use 11 guides. 3 2/0, 3 1/0, 3 1, a 2 and an 8 mm stripper. Most folks are using guides that are too big IMO. Space guides with the static deflection method using rubber bands to hold the guides and moving the spacing around until the spacing is good. Otherwise find a guide spacing chart.

Cheers,

John

Thanks John. Thread colors would be great. I think I have an idea for the 47 but the 59 i dont.

A spacing guide would be good.

A member has benefitted us greatly by posting SB catalogs. These often describe the information you seek per model. A quick search locates them. Wraps and reel seats on your rods changed depending on the year, so you will want to check a few.

If you have already stripped the finish, there should be a shadow for each of the guide locations if you decide to retain original spscing.

There is a wealth of info in this book but there are different wrap colors and patterns. depending on the era. Please post some pics to see if we can narrow it down. Post in the appraisal to get a date and then I can post the wraps.

Thanks!

Thanks . There are only a few wraps that are visible. There seems to be Jasper Orange and Black Wraps on most of the guides and stripper that are still there. I ll try to get a few pics here

The 59's typically used orange / black thread. I'm doing one now with STwrap #614 "Black/ginger"

Black/orange jasper, Gudebrod nylon size A. I have original rods, both the 47 and 59. I can get the original guide spacing if you need it.

There you go! If you don’t have the correct thread try a WTB on the classifieds.

Am I to take it that Sinclair, in his Restoration Handbook, had the colors for both the 47 and the 59 all wrong for his three "periods" (1936, 1942 and 1951)? At no time does he list B/0 jasper for either rod. He does list B/W jasper for the 59 for the periods '42 and '51. In chronological order for the three periods for the 47 he first lists Primrose and Orange for 1936, red and White for 1942, and then it is not listed for 1951. Or was there a later period for both rods that he does not address?

Here's a suggestion: There is very little demand or resale market for these rods because there are a million of them out there. I own them both. Experiment and choose a color combo you like and twist um up. No one is going to tell you did them wrong. Have fun, they are just fishing poles.
