A J Thramer
#1Did AJ always put his name on his rods in script? I have owned 3 Thramer rods and still own 2 of them. They are great rods and very underpriced for their quality. On all of my Thramer rods he signed is name in script style. I am seeing one of AJ's rods advertised on the "big auction" site that shows his name printed on the rod. Umm???? Is this legit?

#2I have one of his, a Payne 200L from his Classic Taper Series, with the printed "signature", with the same tube, and what looks like the rod sock.

#3Ok, thank you for your response. My conclusion is that AJ had two styles for signing his rods. My question is answered and this rod must be legitimate.

#4I don’t know anything about the rods you reference. But I am aware that there was a problem with forged Thramer rods at one time. I’m not sure of the specifics at all and hate to be spreading rumors but know that there was a problem at one time.

#7On the two I own, and the one I formerly owned, the signature looked like John’s. I didn’t know about a forged rod problem.

#8As Harry mentioned there were about 300 fake Chinese Thramer rods sold. A J Is the one who gave that figure here and I know he was rightfully angry and upset about it.

#9If it's the 7' 4 wt. Dx taper, it's legit. He made that one in 2000 and he was printing his name at that time.
Re: A J Thramer
#10I have had several of AJ's rods...all with 'script' writing...the first 3 purchased directly from AJ:
This one a Gillum taper:
This one an AJ DX taper:
This one a Payne 197 taper:
And the final one purchased used....a M50:
Sadly....all have 'moved on'. I liked all but the Gillum which was a bit too fast for my taste. Aj built GREAT rods.
Gary.

#13Hi Matt, I think if you contacted AJ directly he would be your best source of info on this issue. Others here may have some insight too. You can PM directly to AJ via this forum.
I also called up an old thread for you to read just now Matt. It’s under Rod Making, Restorations etc and is titled “Rod Taper Patents?“. In this thread AJ mentions he is willing to help anyone out in authenticating his rods and gives his personal email to those who wish to contact him about this matter. I think it would benefit you to read this thread from 12 years ago.
Best of luck
Adrien
