HEDDON Catalog Listings, 1924-56 w/Ferrule & Fly Rod Charts

#1

Post by wrong66 »

In the following posts will be a chronological list of all the original catalog listings for all models of Heddon bamboo fly rods (and one steel model), from 1924 to 1956. No fiberglass models will be listed. Forum administrators have agreed to pin the thread (thank you, Mark), creating a lasting reference that will be easily accessible to all. A special thanks to Terri Standard and Stephen Hays, both of Washington state, for supplying some of the photos.
Also included, starting in May 2016, will be a complete listing of Heddon's Ferrule & Fly Rod Charts, starting on page 3.
*NOTE* - The demise of Photobucket in July of 2017 turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The discovery of Postimage has allowed me to create a much cleaner and much more comprehensive "Heddon Catalogs" thread. Since this thread was initially created, I've acquired several more Heddon catalogs that weren't available at that time. The information they contain should make this 33-year reference virtually complete.
Mark

From the 1924 catalog, page 12, is Heddon's very first fly rod offering, the No.35. It was simply named "The Heddon Fly Rod".

The 1927 Heddon catalog. Just as Heddon did in 1919, products were available in 1927 in a series of fold-out mailers. They also printed a deluxe "Trade" catalog, but the only copy I know of resides in the Heddon Museum. Here's a photo cropped from the 1927 mailer/catalog, showing the first appearance of the "No.14 Fly Rod". The No.20 is now called the "Bill Stanley's Favorite". The No.35 is mysteriously missing from this mailer, but from Michael's "Fighting Heart" book, we know it was identical to the 1926 model.

Here's Heddon's rod lineup for 1928. Heddon introduces the No.50 "President" and No.51 "Princess" models. The No.20 is part of a full two-page listing. The No.14 is now named the "Thorobred", while the original No.35 is named the "Peerless".

Heddon's 1929 catalog, page 18. Little, if any, changes from the previous year. The first "rod chart" is seen. The No.20 is again in the two page color ad.

Here's the 1930 catalog. Considered the first true "deluxe" catalog for Heddon rods, with full color illustrations of every rod. Heddon introduces the No.13 "Lucky Angler", the No.31 and No.21 "Featherlites" and the No.100 series "Extra-Light" models. Pages 20 & 21 are again a two-page layout for the No.20.

Here's Heddon's 1931 catalog. First appearance for the No.17 "Black Beauty" and No.19 "Sturdymade". The No.20 is again in the two-page centerfold. Not shown here again, it is identical to the 1930 model seen above.

The 1932 Heddon catalog. The No.65 "Deluxe" is new for that year. After 1932, it would be listed in catalogs as the No.60 "Deluxe". Also new for 1932 is the No.225 "Fly-Anglers Outfit", which contained the No.22 "Heddon Special" model. The outfit was only available for 3 years, but it's known that the No.22 was sold individually for an unspecified time, although never offered by itself in catalogs. The No.20 is again not shown, as it is identical to the 1930 model seen above in the two-page ad.

Pictured is the only known listing for the Heddon No.11 "Biltwell", taken from a 1932 Heddon Dealer Supplement and listed under "New Heddon Numbers". At $7.50, it would have been the cheapest Heddon fly rod ever produced. For whatever reason(s), it was never "officially" released as a regular member of Heddon's lineup and never appeared in catalogs. Instead, it's believed that most were sold as trade rods to retailers like Nelson Hardware and likely others, as well. At least a few were marked like a regular model ("Heddon - #11" on the rod shaft and correctly marked bag label) and possibly sold during or directly after WWII, as Heddon had very little stock of their regular models on hand. Few know of the existence of the mysterious "Biltwell", so I thought it should be included in the 1932 section.
Note that the No.19 "Sturdymade" has been discontinued after only one year, replaced by the No.17 in "Extra Heavy Duty" action.

The 1933 Heddon catalog. Introduces the Heddon No.36 "Salmon Special". The No.14 and No.20 are both shown separately in the full two-page listing.

Heddon's 1934 catalog. Introduces the No.10 "Blue Waters". Last year for the No.225 "Fly-Angler's Outfit" (and the No.22 "Heddon Special"), as they were never well-received by fishermen. The No.2030 (extra tip) & No.2020 (single tip) "Life-Pal" STEEL fly rods are introduced. The No.2020 would be discontinued after only one year.

Finally found some good photos of the 1935 Heddon catalog, one of the hardest to come by. Some design and cosmetic changes from the previous year. Both the No.14 and the No.20 were included in the full two-page listing.

Heddon's 1936 catalog. Several design changes, particularly in reel seats. Again, the No.14 and No.20 models can be seen in the full two-page ad.

The 1937 Heddon catalog. Virtually identical to the 1936. The No.14 and No.20 models are again on the two-page layout. Because they are identical to the 1936 models, there is no need to show the photo again.

Heddon's 1938 catalog. Heddon introduces the No.T35 "Tournament Special" version of the No.35. The No.14 and No.20 models are again listed in the full two-page spread. They are both identical to those seen in the 1936 catalog. In what basically amounts to a footnote on page one, the No.31 and No.51 "Featherweights" are brought back for one year only.

The 1939 HEDDON catalog. A multitude of design and cosmetic changes this year. First appearance of the "2-Piece Featherweight" versions of several of the models. Heddon introduces the No.1000 "Rod Of Rods". Again, the No.14 and No.20 models were featured in the full two-page listing, which I've shown below.

The 1940 Heddon catalog. Just a few design changes, is about all. The No.14 and No.20 models are in the two-page listing again. See the 1939 photo, as they are identical to those.
