looking for the Paul H Young Para 13 taper

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

The only two marked Para 13s that I know of were a 7'9" 2/2 rod and a 7'3" 4/2 pack rod. They were both custom-made rods built to meet the unique needs of specific individuals. Perhaps the rare 7'6" Nymph Junior might be considered a Para 13. Descriptions from the PHY Database follow for the 7'9" and 7'3" Para 13s, both offered by Martin J. Keane in 2002:

PHY custom-built Para 13, 7'9", date unknown or not recorded. From MJK's description: "Built for Mr. O.S. Wood of Michigan who reportedly had a very bad medical problem with his shoulder. His son brought him to see Paul Young who built this rod specifically to allow him to continue fishing w/a minimum of discomfort. The rod shaft is marked 'Parabolic 13 7'9" 2.95 oz. HEH line' Also marked 'Fer. 13/64 Tip Tops 4/64 Orville S. Wood Ann Arbor Mich.'" One lightweight dry tip (with red spiral wrapping at tip top) and one heavier tip (green wraps at tip top). Flamed cane, lime green wraps, 2x2 node arrangement, half Wells grip, dual band cork reel seat, second tip ¼" short but apparently built exactly this way. Orig. bag & tube. MJK catalog 84 (2002).

PHY custom Para 13, 7'3", 4-pc. pack rod with wet & dry tips, rod shaft marked Parabolic 13 7'3" 4 pc. wet/dry. From MJK's description: "Custom designed for a doctor from Pennsylvania. The rod sections were selected and cut by Paul Young himself... a pack rod with six pieces, including a top and third section of lighter taper for dry fly use as well as a second top section and additional third section of heavier tapers for wet fly or distance casting." Very dark flamed cane, gold wraps over blued guides, Super-Z blued ferrules, semi half Wells grip, Midge-style inletted cork reel seat w/ dual black aluminum reel bands. Weighs 2.92 oz. in heavy configuration, 2.84 oz. in dry fly configuration. Original six-section bag & tube. MJK catalog 84 (2002).

I’ve have a copy of Marty Keane’s notes regarding the Para 13. It’s dimensions were recorded every inch for the entire length of the rod. I haven’t looked at the specs for a while, but it might have a regression above the handle—and maybe not—I might be confusing it with a Perfectionist.

I saw a Lancaster "Para 13" listed for sale here recently. I was curious if anyone knew the length and line wt of that rod.

Totally agree. It would be wonderful if this taper would be shared with the broader rodmaking public. a 7'9" wt is a configuration I love and would appreciate seeing how a master like Young went about designing this rod.

Thanks,

Jay

It actually makes a dandy of a 4pc rod with truncated ferrules. As does the Para 14. Both 7'9", the P13 a 3/4 and the P14 a 4/5.
