WM 8040 taper please
#1Could someone please provide a reliable taper for this rod? I'm looking for a 4wt that can handle a 5wt, 3 piece. The Lovely Reed in which i have built several rods and they have all been great. But, for this rod they say it is more of a 6wt.
Thanks !
Thanks !
Re: WM 8040 taper please
#3I have 1 taper for the above mentioned rod but i would like to see others that have built it. I'm having a hard time locating this taper even though it is a very popular rod. also, how does this taper (wm) differ from the GG? THANKS

I suspect it's worth it to heed his comments about relative rod speed, and smallish tip dimensions... pretty different from the W&M, and IMHO, maybe less useful for your purpose... But there you go.

#5You might also want to look at this 8ft 3-piece taper, posted by Harry Boyd.
It's "maybe" of Dickerson origin, but significantly different from the published Dickerson 3-pc rods (which were typically made earlier than his 2-pc rods, and often were slower than the later 2-pc rods.

I can vouch for this taper's usefulness in the Rockies.

Re: WM 8040 taper please
#8it is pretty thin, i read somewhere that the W&M are thicker at the tip. Do you fish an 8040 W&M?Lee Koch wrote:Tapermaker posted this early 8040 taper in 2007

Re: WM 8040 taper please
#10Thanks a lot, I'm not very familiar with Granger rods. Would this be a 3 piece? and, do you think it is a Goodwin Granger or Wright and McGill? thanks !Chased wrote:Here's the taper for the 8' Favorite taper as found in Best of the Planing Form V2.

Re: WM 8040 taper please
#11That's a Goodwin Granger 8040 taper, not Wright and McGill according to Ray Gould's book.

#12hey dustdog12, I saw that. Do you fish an 8040? markdustdog12 wrote:That's a Goodwin Granger 8040 taper, not Wright and McGill according to Ray Gould's book.
Re: WM 8040 taper please
#13I used to fish a Wright and McGill 8040 a lot. Loved it. Have only cast the Goodwin Granger version once.
