Hepta taper

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

Hepta taper

Post by GrayHackleRods »

This is a long shot but I’m looking for an original 7 foot 4 or 5 weight taper for a seven sided rod, if you have one and are willing to share I’d really appreciate it. This rod will go along with the Edwards, Kreider and Payne rods I’m making in multiple configurations.

Originally I was doing this for a program for CRR this year but since we cancelled CRR I’ve decided to add a seven sided rod. If I can find an original taper we’ll have 16 rods to play with next year if not I’ll just convert the Edwards, Kreider and Payne to heptas and have 12 rods.

I will send you the taper for my EVH 7 strip, one of the very first ever so you can not get more original than this one

I have nothing to add except "wow, math and angles and everything else".
Actually, I do have one thing to add:
Are you going to hollow build it?

Just wondering - how do you make a hepta rod? Do you have a set of planing forms made specifically for that (just as you'd need for a penta rod)?

I have a Morgan Hand Mill, they offer cutting heads for 4 to 8 sided rods.

Glenn Brackett made me a 3 piece 7'11" hepta blanks sweetgrass rod 4-5 weight. I kept everything odd length etc. Its one of the best casting and fishing rods I own. I use it often in the mid size creeks!

Jeff,
As with all odd numbered polygons you will have to measure apex to flat and then use the dreaded geometry to solve for the strip dimensions, same as with a penta. These are the angles and the triangles you have to work with.

All I need is the average of the sides at 1” stations, I’ll do the math to convert to strip height and then convert to quad, hex and penta. Got to love this stay at home stuff Gives me time to make 16 rods!

Starting with original tapers of 4, 5, 6 and 7 sided rods then converting each of those into the configurations, when done I will have 4 sets of 4 rods each. I’m starting with an Edwards quad, a Kreider penta, a Payne hex and the hepta rod that the Gnome is providing the taper for. To date I have 9 rods glued, 7 impregnated and 2 with finish, still a long way to go…
