Looking for a 10' DH trout spey taper

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

Looking for a 10' DH trout spey taper

#1

Post by oddsnrods »

I am looking for a light trout double handed spey type rod taper to use with Scandi heads and DT 6wt. (trout sized) lines. I was thinking 10' (or so) length which woud be useful to fish soft hackles and various traditional wet flies; I will probably hollow the rod. I am not after a steelhead taper, have made a couple of those, I am after something more subtle for brown trout waters. The 9' Hardy Phantom (SH) piques my interest, having been described as 'putting out a lovely line', although it is 9' and SH, although could 'stretch' it or similar. The reason for DH is to be able to cast without the usual backcast in tight quarters.

Thank you,
Malcolm

I made my first doublehander by adapting the taper listed for the South Bend Cross 1927 Light Salmon rod - gave it a slightly less steep taper, and changed the dimensions at the ferrule stations to accomodate bamboo ferrules.

From 1963 to 1967 Hardy made the Phantom in 10 feet too.

Yes I have the taper for the 9' Phantom, but not the 10' version. I also have, what look like interesting taper prospects, with (more Hardy's) Taupo, Pope and Houghton all 10' although SH 7wts, which I could well be reduced somewhat to become 6 or so.

More to experiment with.

Here's a design for an 10.5 Trout Spey that I have recently completed. Current emergency has kept me from going fishing with it, but I really like the way it throws a 200 grain Rio Trout Spey line. I made it as a 4 piece to keep disassembled length convenient for travel. The ferrules are 10, 16 and 23/64

So I'm very new to bamboo rod building. How do I increase this 200 grain taper to a 350 grain taper...and maybe to 11 feet? I'm thinking of a summer run steelhead 5 wt DH rod. I've been looking all over for a three or four piece taper and can't locate one. Seems, understandably, all the tapers run toward Atlantic salmon size rods.
I've recently joined this forum and really appreciate the cooperative and encouraging nature of all the members. Also ogling all the beautiful rods.
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I get the feeling the original poster would also have to increase the size of this taper to get to a 6 wt DH rod.
Thanks for any help.
