Payne 79 taper

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

Payne 79 taper

#1

Post by 16parachuteadams »

Hi, I bought a Payne taper 79 a while back and have been playing around with different line & reel combinations to find it's sweet spot for my self taught casting style. To my surprise a WF7 on a 3 1/4" Saracione seems to be the optimum combination of stuff I have. With a 6 wt the rod does not begin to really load until 40+ feet of line are out. Would love to try a TT7. Anyway, is this the usual performance of this taper?

The reprint of the 1975 Payne catalog lists two 7'9" Payne parabolics, a regular model for 4 or 5 wt, and a heavier model fo 6 or 7 wt.

Thank you, that is good to know. I know nothing about Payne rods.
