which 8 footer

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

Looking for input into my next build. Ive done a Payne 101 and then a Payne 98. Now I'm looking for input into my next rod. Need an 8 footer in the quiver. Thinking bout a Payne 102 or Dickerson 8013. Any comments or suggestions?

Leonard 50 DF? My second favorite rod of all time, definitely my favorite 8 footer- especially now that I have an original Tournament model.

I finished out a slightly lengthened hollow 8013 blank that Dennis Stone built for me....it's a rocket and lovely fast and powerful taper for larger water, strong fish and current.

... unless you are looking for a gentler taper, then consider the Dickerson 8012. It is not what I understand to be a typical Dickerson thunderstick. I have one built on a Stone blank and it feels to me like a lighter version of the Orvis 4 1/8 oz rod.

Are you specifically looking for a two-piece taper? Because you might want to consider a 3-piece like the Payne 200 series or a Granger 8040, in addition to the already-mentioned Leonard 50.

I’ve decided on the Payne 102. This is just my third rod build. Wanted to stay in my lane for now. Will move on to a three price 8’ on the next one. Thank you all for the input.

I would say it looks like you are on a Payne roll, so stay with it. You can not go wrong in that direction and there is ample documentation and accolades to go with this taper. I think it would do you service to also investigate the Payne 103. I own both the 102 and the 103, they are both fine rod tapers. The 102 is a 5 WT, but could cross down into a 4 if you are a more aggressive caster. The 103 is a strong 5 and could handle a 6 close in. To date you have selected in the 98 and 101 the stronger Payne tapers in those rod lengths (versus the 97 and 100) so I thought you may want to go with the stronger action 103. Look into it.

Chance favors the prepared mind!

Good luck on the next build!

I really appreciate the comments. Will definitely look at the 103. I’m trying to rebuild my cast from fast action composite to bamboo so the 103 might be a good one for me. Thanks again. Got final planing done today and glued up and in the drying cabinet. My arms are spent and I’m going to just turn a reel seat tomorrow.

Good to see that you are dedicated to Payne rods fireman, after all, Jim was regarded by many as the greatest builder of all time and that is my belief as well.

I cast the 98 yesterday in the yard. Didn’t care for it with a 4 wt. loved it with a 5 DT.

Can’t say I’m dedicated to any one maker. Just getting started in this and will definitely explore other tapers.

This 102 was a bugger to get to the numbers. Beat up culm and I didn’t cook it long enough. Plane wanted to dig. Ended up sharpening every other strip and worked through it.

When you decide to expand your taper horizons, I'd recommend the 1949 (Lovely Reed) version of the Dickerson 8013.

Well, I made the Dickerson 8013 Lovely Reed version. Finally got it out of the drying cabinet today and lined it up. I think this is going to be my favorite rod for now. I certainly like it more than any other rod ive cast as of now. Thank you Lee for the recommendation.
