Payne 101 Taper?

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

Payne 101 Taper?

#1

Post by PGPerk »

I made a Payne 98 which is a 2 pc. 7' 4wt. last year as my first rod. I really like the feel of this rod. Now, I would like to build a 2 pc. 71/2' 5 wt. and have chosen a Payne 101. I have found some info for this taper but measurements were taken from a varnished rod. Would anyone be willing to share a taper for a Payne 101 that does not include the varnish? Thank you in advance for any information you may provide.

I have made a few dozen 101's over the years and they are very good 7'6" five weights. Following are the taper numbers I go by:
68, 96, 104, 121, 135, 150, 164, 170, 185, 200(size 13 ferrule), 220, 223, 237, 252, 268, 283, 318, 326, 326. Who knows if these are the "official" numbers for this taper but they all turn out to be true 5 weights that are nice rods for both nymphing and dry flying on small to medium size waters.

I don't know if you will find your taper on an unvarnished rod but FWIW we made 3 Payne 101 rods using the taper by Dennis Higham in Hexrod. If you click on his name you'll get the measurements over varnish for all 3 flats. We used the average of the 3 dimensions minus .003" for varnish. Used a 13-12 step down ferrule. They all cast well with a 5 weight line. They are hollowed and weigh about 3 1/2 oz.

Here's the numbers we used:

Not really all that similar. The 100 is a medium auctioned four weight. The 101 is a medium fast five weight.

I was going to build a 100 for a friend (newer fly angler) but through other conversations figured a 5wt would be better. I was just going to scale up the 100 using RodDNA but the faster action of the 101 might be better for him too.
