12' 7wt Spey Rod 3pc.

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

12' 7wt Spey Rod 3pc.

#1

Post by CaneCaster »

I have been asked many times about spey rod tapers, where to find them, etc thru PM's and Emails. I have helped out/assisted quite a few makers with some details to build a bamboo spey rod for themselves. So I thought I would post up a taper, derived from a sharpes taper with a few updates to make it a little more modern feeling and put it out there in the public realm. This is a pretty good all purpose spey taper for all spey line types (7 wt SPEY lines not 7wt singlehand lines) with a line grain tolerance of between 430-650 grains depending on line type and belly length. This taper would suit any style of joint or connection you wish and suits both novice as well as more accomplished casters.

Hi Guys, Well, I hadn't thought about it, but if I ever get around to it, here's a starting point. Thank You, Jay Edwards

Thanks James. My son caught his first steelhead today and I think he's hooked. I might have to build one for myself and go visit him.

No rush, I'm still gathering tools and materials and I have at least one rod ahead of this one.
Maybe next winter he'll catch his first one on cane.

James, thanks for posting. Love your work.
This is perfect timing for me as I just had a friend in Alaska ask me for a spey rod. So looks like Ill be building this rod. Thanks

Tim.
He looks very excited! Nice wild fish too. Let him know that it is illegal in the state of WA to remove steelhead from the water, I have been corrected on that in the past by some WA friends.

I like the little "regression divot" you put in the butt of the taper.

James, you describe this as a taper for a solid-built rod. Any reason one could not hollow build it?

Hi Wayne - could you explain the "regression divot" you're referring to?

To me, regression means "going backwards", i.e. getting smaller as a person moves down the rod, which I've seen in several PY tapers, but not in this one.

Do you mean how the slope decreases in the butt section? It's still getting fatter as you go down the rod, just not as fast?

Thanks,

lee

Matcliff. You can do as you please with the taper, any changes or alterations you would normally make to a taper to hollow build would apply as well.

Lee. I think what Wayne might be talking about is the decrease in slope of the butt of the rod. I would also call it a regressive taper or termed another way, semi-parabolic. And you are correct the rod is still increasing in diameter duuring the entire length of the taper, only the slope of that increase or increase as a percentage is less.
I too have seen some Young tapers with an actuall decrease in rod diameter.... a "Boat Rod" taper I have seen seems to ring a bell.

hi Lee

I was refering to the little drop in the dimension graph below SLT at about 90" to 110". The effect can be seen in the stress curve as a bump at around the same place. Here are both the dimension and stress curves. The red curve is James modified Sharpes taper and the blue is just a B9 straight line taper.

My Boat Rod has its max dimension about 5-7" above the grip. The taper definitely regresses in the last bit before cork and makes the parabolic nature much more extreme. The graph here and James's description shows a similar, but less aggressive effect by reducing slope of the taper, without actually diminishing diameter.

How do you think this taper would be for overhead casting shooting heads into the surf?

Just fine Tim. Although if that was the primary use for the rod i would choose a different line than I would for spey casting.

Cool, I will have to build one for myself too. If I build it for surf fishing, I just might get to go salmon/steelhead fishing someday.

Thank you for posting this taper. I'm in the process of building this rod; ready to plane strips, and need some help on guide sizing and spacing. I'm sure I will have to order some of them. Any help would be appreciated.
