Looking for the maker of this rod marked with an 'N'

This is the board to ask about the identity, or for an appraisal, of a rod. Please use the outline as explained on the board. If there is a makers name, list that in the subject line. Make sure you include the length, number of sections, any identifying markings and the general condition. Adding photographs is always helpful!

Looking for the maker of this rod marked with an 'N'

Post by Boogityman »

Hi all,

I got this rod from my Uncle as part of clearing his old house after he passed a few years ago. I have always been curious about the origins, and have searched around a few times but could never find anything that matched this mark. It looks like an N. I have inspected the rod and haven't found any other markings.

He lived in Montreal, frequented the Laurentian area north of Montreal, and also drove down to Florida often. So I'm guessing it is from somewhere in there, even if that does include the entire Easter seabord or just about...!

According to other family members, likely dates from somewhere in the 50-70's.

Anyways just hoping to get some more info on this mystery, I love antiques but even more I love solving where they came from!

Maybe a stupid question, but is this rod still usable? I mean I don't have a reel but thinking about giving it a shot, but will it just snap right off the bat? Or may actually work?

Thanks and all the best,
BImageImageImage

Hm ok well that seems like it was so easy I should have come across it before... So really nothing special about it/could have been purchased anywhere at any time? Oh well at least now I know!

Produced sometime following WWII. Late 40's or 50's.

Japanese for (almost) certain. There were two makers, more likely two brand names that started with N, both packed in wood boxes with accessories, wrapped with black & white jasper thread, and fitted with chrome-plated hardware. One was Nippon Fishing Tackle often having a label with N.F.T. on the lid of the box, another Naruto. Googling images with those names will turn up examples. There could have been others. They are all of similar quality, generally not high. They sold in military PX's for as low as $2 after the war. There are enough surviving examples to make me wonder if Japan got back on it's feet just on the profits from those boxed kits.
