Value of a Gillum

This is the board to ask about the identity, or for an appraisal, of a rod. Please use the outline as explained on the board. If there is a makers name, list that in the subject line. Make sure you include the length, number of sections, any identifying markings and the general condition. Adding photographs is always helpful!

Value of a Gillum

#1

Post by Minnesota »

How much do you think this Gillum is worth? It is a two piece, 7.5’, 4 weight rod. The rod has two tips and is full length with either tip. The reel seat insert appears to be walnut and has the only flaw I can find on the rod. The dark area on it is probably a water mark. It has been filled completely with varnish and polished smooth. I haven’t been brave enough to cast it, so I can not comment on it’s action. Overall, it is in excellent condition. It includes the original bag and partially labeled tube.

Check previous sales, probably not many. The question, what is it worth? Whatever a seller & buyer agree on, that’s your wallet.

Based on past Gillum sales through Lang's Auctions over the last 10-15 years, it could bring $5500, plus or minus.

At the peak of the market the trout rods were selling for big money with a few sales of shorter rods in excess of $10K. That was over 10 years ago and things have changed dramatically. As stated above, in today's market $5,500 would be a realistic value in my opinion.

Where can I get 7.5’ or 8’ 4 or 5wt. In excellent+ or mint condition for $5500?

These guys gave you an average from past sales. As mentioned, they don't come up for sale very often, so it's not like you can go down to the corner store and get one or choose from different lengths and weights. It's a waiting and timing game that may take years to get exactly what you want. So really, it's not even a legit question to ask for a value on one of these. Somebody else said^^^, it's what the seller is asking and what the buyer is willing to pay.

Without handling the rod its hard to say, if its exceptional, north of $5K is not out of the question, not sure there is $10K Gillum at that length though...

I’d agree but maybe more then 5,000 I’d say 7,000
But if you posted the rod for 7,000 would you get it
?!
On this form NO
Maybe a dealer but it would sit there awhile and you’d get 20% less
Back to 5500 $$
So I think they are right in saying private sale
5-5500
I love gillum rods if you posted it today for 5500 I’d pass on the rod
So there you are

Not many guys who have the funds to have a large collection of expensive rods.

It's funny I saw this. Just talked to an old timer -85yrs old- on the Farmington who said years ago his pal was seeing on and off Gillum's granddaughter. When asked she said they had a closet full of his rods that were never used. Before he could get more info his pal broke up with her in a nasty way. Would not give him her address or phone number so he could make an offer on the rods...
I want to be buried with my favorite rod.

I don’t think that anyone with a Gillum for sale is going to just let you have it on the cheap. What length do you think might bring a high price?

We should all know that what people are asking is not an indicator of what something is worth.

Then which theory of economic worth do you recommend: the labor it took to make the item,
what you are willing to pay for it, the price a dealer is asking, the rarity of the item, etc?

The number of rods available, the number of individuals who want the rod (collectively what is considered to be the supply), and what any one buyer is willing to pay (known as demand), generally referred to as capitalism.
