Payne banty?

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

Here's the Payne Banty as supplied by Hal Bacon from the original beveler setup, converted to 5" stations for your typical Garrison style forms. There's a light and a heavy version - the original beveler setup made an over long section that could then by cut to make either a 4 or a 5 weight rod. There's a medium version I worked out as well, that in theory would be a 4/5. I can post that if anyone's interested. I have yet to build one of these, but the original post from Hal mentioned that it was good in close, maybe 30', but no distance rod.

Both rods are 4'4"

The light version:

Point
(Inches) Dimension
(Inches) Stress 0 0.052 - 5 0.078 139040 10 0.088 200642 15 0.110 160293 20 0.124 156120 25 0.140 142639 30 0.152 146489 35 0.168 138174 40 0.186 126115 45 0.212 103564 50 0.228 101354
Ferrule 1 Size 9/64
Rod is 9.11/64 (0.142 Inches) at 26.00 in from tip

The heavy version:

Point
(Inches) Dimension
(Inches) Stress 0 0.066 - 5 0.080 149554 10 0.098 168349 15 0.114 166810 20 0.132 149675 25 0.146 145140 30 0.158 149406 35 0.176 136776 40 0.196 122042 45 0.228 93886 50 0.228 104725
Ferrule 1 Size 9/64
Rod is 9.34/64 (0.146 Inches) at 26.00 in from tip

A picture of an original I got from somewhere:

Dennis

When the season re-opens, I know a couple places where you can REALLY use this rod.

Best

Bob

PS - Will it cast well with my BHs ?

Horsesho...
If I remember correctly 4'4" was the perfect size to lay crosswise across the gunnels of a canoe.
