8' Hawes

I've been after a friend's 9' Hawes for some time but I've never had enough cash when he's looking to sell it. I thought that would be my only chance at owning a Hawes until I was fortunate enough to trade my way into this one. It is an 8' 3/2 4wt and if it didn't have a Hawes reelseat on it, I'd swear it's an early Leonard Model 50.Image

Have only seen 1 8' 3 pc Hawes before and I agree it could have passed for an 8' Model 50 Leonard which doesn't surprise me since more than a few 8' 3 pc rods got their beginnings on that taper and with Hawes being an instrumental force at Leonard it makes perfect sense. Nice looking rod............

Very nice rod Matt. I'm glad you found such a nice one.

Thanks guys, I was lucky to have found it. I nearly wrote it off as it was described as a 5wt. It has been restored and it will be fished appropriately.

Banjo, I agree with your comment about the Model 50. It is a great taper that was the foundation for a lot of other great tapers.

I now have a Hawes from what I believe is from the Leonard-Hawes catalog period, 8' 3/2 DF action.

A lovely 8’ 3/2 restored by Don
Schroeder Leonard-Hawes DF rod in a damn near Leonard tube arrived.
