A Trout is 10-inches

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

A Trout is 10-inches

I just perused the latest issue of Fly Fisherman. I enjoyed the stories, but thought about the trout porn always featured on the cover. I remember issues I bought in the early 90s, while beginning this sport, and those huge fish on the mag covers caused me to feel a certain inferiority, as my fish were minuscule in comparison. Once, while fishing in Michigan's U.P., I met some anglers from Alpena, where I believe A.K. Best hails from. One of them quoted Best who reportedly said, "Let's face it, a trout is 10-inches." I have no idea whether Mr. Best was the origin of the quote, though it does sound like something he'd say. But I often remember it on days of average catching. Let's face it...

Size doesn't matter. This guy didn't know he wasn't 10"s. :) To me at trout is a trout. Period.

Almost.... Harmon Henkin’s 1976 book “Fly Tackle” quotes Russ Chatham as criticizing Henkin’s use of a 9 foot Paul Young Florida Special for trout in Montana saying “You know a trout is a twelve inch fish.”

Treat Fly Fishing as sex. Anticipation adds to the experience, enjoy the act and if you were satisfied at the end of the day don't go out and compare inches with with everyone

Billy, where we fish 12" has been known to be "a nice one!"

I/we have pals who would smile at that but for me it still is!

Stay positive, next season will be super (esp. if this damned Covid leaves us.)

After a great autumn day taking brookies on dry flies I would like to suggest that 6" can be a very nice little present.
