#61We see many hawks around home, I can recognize Redtails and Coopers, but that's about it.
Sounds like a fun article, I'll try to find it - thanks Bee.

Re: Any Raptor Lovers?
#62Yep, I'm a raptor lover from way, way back. I'm especially fond of eagles. Highlights of my bird-watching life have been seeing Steller's Sea Eagles in Kamchatka and White-tailed Sea Eagles in Norway, in connection with fishing trips. Occasionally, I have made special trips to see raptors, including a Spanish Imperial Eagle, Griffon Vultures, Cinereous Vultures and Lammergeiers in Spain.
But if I were a Native American, my totem animal would be the Golden Eagle. They are just awesome.

#64You are very lucky to have such a great opportunity to observe that Great Horned Owl family! Just try to keep the nest location under wraps. Overly enthusiastic birders/photographers can become a problem, especially with Owls.

#65There has been only one Lady, who I met today, in the years we have been here.
She is ultra polite and asks permission. I think all neighbors would police access if it got busy - it is private property after all.

#66This huge scary raptor kept the chickens on the ramp outside the coop every cold night this winter, until he was done napping under the heat lamp and went about his normal nocturnal habits. The owl was as big as their heads but they would not suffer being in the coop with a raptor. Northern Pygmy Owls are rare so it was a treat to see, and he was not moving until his allotted time in the spa was over. This allowed us some extreme closeups.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it. T.R.

Re: Any Raptor Lovers?
#68Great pic! Recently my wife said. "What's that on the neighbor's lawn?" I grabbed the binocs we keep by the door and looked; it was a hawk and he appeared to have a blackbird pinned to the ground. I started for my camera but he took off, bird in grasp.
I spent most of my money on shotguns, fly rods, guitars and banjos. The rest I just wasted. (Apologies to W.C. Fields)

#70Absolutely fantastic photos, and looks like you sure get around.
One the three Owlets showed up in front of a neighbor’s picture window this AM. Made its way across our quiet dead end street and climbed a Maple tree. It will be interesting to see if Mom and/or Dad herds it back into the nest tree to again join the other two. Guessing it is the boldest (observed) of the three young and wanted to see what was on the other side of the road.
