Let me tell you about Cool Hand Luke...

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Let me tell you about Cool Hand Luke...

Cool Hand Luke is my favorite movie of all time. My Dad made/forced me watch it in 1985 - and I am glad he did.
Unless people object, may I offer some trivia every day or so... feel free to add to it.

Boss Godfrey had only one line in the whole movie. What was it ?

Although he loved the look of Morgan Woodward as the intimidating Boss Godfrey, director Stuart Rosenberg felt that his voice didn't match up with his appearance. So Woodward had almost all of his dialogue stripped out, helping to establish his character as one of the more memorable ones that appeared in the film. His only line was " Luke, fetch the rifle." just before shooting the turtle.

It most certainly is at the top of my list of favorite movies if not number 1. Brian, would like to hear any tidbits you can share about it.

My favorite line is when the 'prison warden' tells Luke (and I paraphrase) "Now Luke, I can be one hell of a nice guy or I can be one mean son-of-a-bitch, the choice is up to you."

She was 30 feet tall in the movie, "Village of the Giants", was a Miss Connecticut and was a guest star on the show, "The Monkees". Yes it was Lucille!

As a young nine year old boy when this movie came out, I had heard about the 'car wash scene' from the older kids. Can't recall when I saw the movie for the first time but it wasn't that long after it came out in 1967 but man-a-live, that scene was a real, shall we say, revealing moment for a young kid from Pittsburgh! :lol

For you under 40 guys that aren't familiar with what I'm talking about, here's a clue. Remember, this was in a movie 53 years ago:

Still shaking here Boss...

Image

Almost immediately after his first running off, Luke escapes again from the chain gang while having "privacy" behind some bushy trees.
To prove he's there in the bushes, he repeatedly calls out while shaking the branches: "Still shakin' it, boss, still shakin'. I'm shakin' it, boss."
He tricks the guards by tying a string to a branch and tugging on it from a long distance away.

Image

After escaping, Luke speaks to two curious boys who ask about his leg-iron chains: "Whatcha got them on for?...How do ya take your pants off?"
He dares one of the boys to be strong enough to heft and bring him a heavy axe. The other boy encourages him to take the incriminating stripes off his pants. With a few strokes, Luke chops off the leg irons.

Dragline: You're an original, that's what you are. Them mullet-heads didn't even know you was foolin'.
Luke: Foolin' 'em, huh? You can't fool 'em about somethin' like that. They broke me...
Dragline: Aw. All that time, you was plannin' on runnin' again.
Luke: I never planned anything in my life

A great movie indeed. I love the boxing scene where he wins the respect of everyone by being unwilling to stay down despite being overmatched. The physical and mental willingness to not quit... gets me everytime!

This movie was a standard in our alert shack in Incirlik AB Turkey (1988), we had a big library of VHS movies, while we sat Nuclear alert for two weeks at a time. I think we had all the cool phrases memorized. Just think we could be watching cool hand Luke and 10 minutes later we could be 500 kts on the deck and be on the way to Nuc something east of the iron curtain. Ah the good old days...great movie.

+1 Of all the scenes in that movie, that is probably the one life lesson that has the most important to me.

One of the many great anti-hero movies of the golden era, from the Graduate to the movie that killed movies, Star Wars.

That is one of a handful of movies (which includes Goodfellas) that if I'm clicking away and come across it, I'm compelled to finish it out. Doesn't matter if there's an hour left, or 5 minutes, it's a show stopper for me.

From the nursing home yesterday - just as certain as the confusion swirling inside his brain,
my Dad asked me if I had my mind right.

Yeah Dad... still shaking here boss.

EDIT - The last thing he ever said to me.

A little soundtrack help.

Below are difficult song lyrics from the movie :

Get yourself a sweet Madonna
Dressed in rhinestones sittin' on a
Pedestal of abalone shell.

Going ninety I ain't scary
Cause I got the Virgin Mary
Assurin' me that I won't go to Hell.
