Source for reel cases
#1Who's offering decent reel cases these days, separate from buying a new reel? I've acquired a few reels that came without a case and I found these padded cases from LL Bean. Sadly, they no longer offer them and so far my search for anything like them has turned up empty. Is there anything out there like this now?

#5Jeff,
Ward Tonsfeldt at Classic Flyfishing Tackle has cases from A.E. Nelson. Nice leather cases with shearling wool inside.
I have a couple and recommend them.

#6I've gotten a few of these and have been pleased with them for the price:

Filson also makes nice canvas and shearling cases.

#7Thank you for all of the links. I've known about Arne Mason's cases for over 20 years and I really should eventually splurge on one for my 3" leaded St. George.

#8I saw two for the first time this summer. Rod cases. Just unbelievable the craftsmanship that went in to making them. They're as much a work of art as what what inside them.

Re: Source for reel cases
#9I thought that Arne stopped making cases and CFFT shows them sold out. Is this not the case (no pun intended)?
Re: Source for reel cases
#10My understanding is that Arne has finally retired for good.
Those A.E. Nelson cases that Ward has are really pretty nice and a fraction of the price of a Mason.

#13Orvis has a sale going on right now, $6 for their neoprene reel cases.

#14I use Crown Royal bags, when traveling. Pack of 10 for $25 on Amazon. They protect against bumps and scratches and don't take up as much room as manufacturer cases.

#15Srock, I guess that depends upon the size of your 'bank'. I ordered one to give them a try, but $93 and change certainly isn't all that reasonable. I hope it is worth the money.
I miss the quality American made cases from Dart Mfg., etc. where you got a nice leather case with a real sheepskin lining for a reasonable price in the $25 range. Seems like every case I have ordered advertised as "sheepskin" or "lambs wool" lining, and priced accordingly has been cheap synthetic fleece like the $10 cases made overseas, and that includes the ones on ebay posted above, though I see that vendor has changed their description to remove "lambswool". Too late for me.
Does anyone remember the days when you actually received what was described?

#16Arne Mason is no longer in business. He had said that after all the years leather crafting, "his hands are tired".
Re: Source for reel cases
#18I agree that timber and Fin prices are not cheap, but they are also not as expensive as some other well known brands. I think the cost of the case is based on size. The mid size reel cases are about $93. A bit more for the larger sizes. I also liked the LL bean reel cases and it is easy to find less expensive reel cases for every day use. The A.E. Nelson cases are very nice for the price, especially when compared to an Arne Mason. Let’s face it, buying good fly fishing gear is expensive, but if you do it over a long period of time, and fish a lot, the costs trend down and the sticker shock seems less problematic.

#19Look for seller “Johnshooterengland” on Ebay. They sell top grain leather cases in three sizes at very reasonable prices. I’ve got several and like them a lot.
