Silk fly line question - actual weight of DT 4

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Silk fly line question - actual weight of DT 4

#1

Post by Brian K. Shaffer »

What would a 4 weight silk Double Taper line weigh ? this is 23.6 Grams

Loops on both ends prevent me from burning to test...
The twist ties could give away who made it ? likely recent Chinese manufacture...

Thanks very kindly - Brian

I have a new, never used Zhu line I bought direct and the box is marked DT5. It weighs 22 grams on two different scales with two of the gold metallic twist ties in place. Mine doesn't have loops, so that might be some of the difference along with one less twist tie.

Thank you so very kindly... this place is so awesome.
My theory is likely Zhus made it and his buddy added loops to it.
Only his twist ties are black... and they keep stuff straight that way.

I have a brand new in the box Phoenix Silk DT5 line that weighs 28grams. A DT line usually goes from high 26 to 30 grams. At least that is what Phoenix has told me. I would say that your lines 22 and 23grams would be more of a DT4 line.

The line weights 363 grains = or-, you do not weigh the entire line, only the first 30 feet. A 4 wt line should weigh about 120 grains (first 30 feet).
15.4 grains= 1 gram.
