Dave Whitlock interview - up close, great readin!
#1Fun to stumble onto something joyful once in a while. This from Oct 2, 2019.
With over 300 flies created, what a treasure Dave is to fly fishing.
He has done so much to help every fly fisher today.
His style is dazzling, too.

-------------
I know what he has done with those White River Vibert boxes and the success
in bringing back fish to Rim Shoals to spawn year after year.
Giant fish swim there because of Dave!
I am thankful to him often.

#2I'm sure Mr. Whitlock is a remarkable man. But I also know that he's absconded many a pattern from other anglers and marketed them as his own. I remember that he called a hunk of yarn on a leader, "Dave's Strike Indicator." George Harvey was the first to use diluted Shoo-Goo as his head cement, and it was soon marketed as "Dave's Fleximent." There is something a bit of "Colonel Tom Parker" about the man, which has me a bit jaundiced about him.

#4Wow-what has billems added to the collective knowledge on a level that is equal to what Dave has done?? and does it allow that level of ungentlemanly conduct?? How many books has Dave written and illustrated compared to the knowledge and art that billems has done in comparison. Yes there is the 1st amendment but does it cover publicly calling a person a thief even though the word thief was not used but absconded was? That gives the 1st a bad name!

#5Everyone is entitled to his opinion and this could possibly have validity - I could care less.
Thanks for the contribution bill... positive or not.
I get into stuff like this... and for the sport - I am glad Dave does too.
Those little black dots are trout eyeballs!

#6I'm not disparging the man's accomplishments. Just mentioning why I'm not a fan. I'm not a fishing book writer, or a "fly fishing professional." If I happen to think he's a bit of a carny, so what? Geeze!

#7The double standard here!! if those types of remarks were made about a rod maker the post would be locked or yanked why do the rules not apply to fly tiers as well? The last sentence in the first paragraph of the FORUM RULES
flaming, or slanderous posts are not acceptable. accusing a man of theft is slanderous with no proof.
the word used was abscond =

#9Dave is a true Icon of the sport and deserves an extreme amount of respect!! One of my most treasured possessions is an original of a Colorado Cutt that Dave did especially for me, and Then there is Emily another treasure of our sport and My favorite Jewelry Model!!! Two people, I am honored to count as very close friends, Looking forward to seeing them at the Denver fly fishing show in February. Emily has a surprise coming at the show this year as does Dave.

#10ThanKs for sharing that. Dave has been a huge influence on my angling since I started at age 14. He is a fabulous person as well- was fortunate to meet he and Emily when they were sitting in my restaurant one time. Wonderful people that have had a major impact on fly fishing and tying for me. He is, in my opinion, a fly fishing icon and treasure.
Best, Chris

#12To put colored pencil to paper and come up with something this good sure is some kind of talent.
The man has a birthday coming up November 11th... Happy early Birthday Dave!

#13Read his books and watched his videos. Feel I learned a bunch from him. His contributions to the sport should be applauded.

#16I enjoyed the interview. Having grown up in Southern Kansas, I fished for bass and bluegill from childhood, and when I eventually started fly fishing it was for those species. I leaned heavily on Dave Whitlock's illustrated books for information as a result. When I started talking to him at fly fishing shows years later, I realized that his art was as important to him as fishing. I always found him and Emily to be friendly and open.

#17One of the favorite frames I had done are of Dave's flies and art. Still need to get a brass museum plate added with his name
