1 Year in Photos of Table Rock Dam open / closed / night / Trout!

In the evening distance is Table Rock Dam holding back its massive 200 foot deep lake.
Clean, gin clear water and lots of scuds and sowbugs keep our trout happy.

Be careful around these kinds of dams.. water can and will (could & has) come on without a horn.
It's maddening. LEAVE a $100 on a rock at water level... you'll keep an eye on it then.

Dams are an interesting topic when it comes to fishing. Dams that slow or stop the progression of anadromous fish we want gone! But dams have also helped cultivate some of the best trout fishing in the world. I am a tail water junkie! Most of my favorite trout streams receive cold flows from bottom release dams.

Right now - there is one unit down at Table Rock... so they are spilling a little.

Electric baseboard heat the bane of southern fly fisherman, at least you don't have to post hole thru 3' of snow to get to the river!

I am officially giving up.... if you follow this - it has been flowing 3 or more units since late last year!

This water has shut down to 0 units a total of 4 times in 1 year.

Brian,

Thank you for these photos and info shared. I found it all very interesting indeed, never having seen the area but hear so much about it!

Maybe my son Nate and I will visit sometime. Looks to an adventure...of sorts. :D

Never did I show the LAKE side... so here is TABLE ROCK LAKE :

Image

Underneath is Lake Taneycomo. A lake only because it is dam'd at both ends.
Otherwise - it can be a swift dangerous river.

0 units running at the DAM = 40CFS
4 Units running full load of 54 MW - 14,400cfs

(ALL 10 gates open - the Cubic Feet per Second was 22,000.. the trout called me and told me they didnt like it)

Those of us that fish for brook trout in Michigan prefer that introduced trash fish like Great Lakes Cohos and Kings were kept out of our streams even if by cursed dams.

This past Tuesday :

Image

Notice 5 gates spilling 2 1/2 foot each and 5 gates spilling 12 inches each... pretty cool huh.

And last night - Friday April 18th 2020 :

Image

________

This beautiful shot was Saturday 4/19/2020 evening... before a light rain at midnight.
4 giant turbines spinning inside the dam, pumping out 14,400cfs by themselves - to the right.

MAN that looks a lot more reasonable than all 10! You are going to be fishing soon if that keeps up...
