Pond Fishing for Bluegill
#1All the trout streams in my area are blown out because of the recent non stop rains. So tonight I grabbed a vintage bamboo 6' ultra-light spinning rod and headed to a local pond to catch bluegill. Had almost forgotten how much fun catching bluegill can be
My wife came along and snapped a few photos. She got a nice photo of me and a great photo of the geese:

#2Nice! Bluegill are definitely underrated. Especially at this time of the year!

#6Yes it's bamboo and I purchased it from a dealer a few years ago. It appears to have Orvis hardware but I can't be sure. The rod is marked B1005:dave potts wrote:Is that a Bamboo spinning rod? Did you make it yourself? Sharp looking rod.
The makers name is on it … W. L. Sullivan:
And the rod was made for … Faye - Ann:
If anyone knows anything about W. L. Sullivan or has seen another rod like this, please let me know

#10I don't think there's a better way to introduce people to fly fishing than on a farm pond filled with bluegill on a late spring evening.
A few years ago I read an article in one of the fly fishing magazines where they interviewed guides and asked them about their "dream trip". One of the guides from Alaska, who fished the salmon runs and for Alaskan rainbows, said he'd like to return to the Minnesota farm ponds of his childhood and fish for bluegill. I remember this article because I was so surprised (and pleased) at this response.

#12I had a three piece 9 foot Southbend rod that I had a guy in Kansas City make a Banty out of. It really turned out nice. I have another three piece 9 footer that I may make a " Spinny" from.
Flyrod, would you mind measuring the guide spacing on that rod and send me.
Thanks,
Dave

The ultra-light rod is set up with a staggered ferrule. The butt section is 35" and the tip section is 38".
The guide spacing measuring for the tiptop is: 5 1/2" - 12 3/4" - 21 1/4" - 30 3/4" - 44 3/4". Hope this helps!
Cheers, Stan

#15Hello Stan - That Sullivan B1005 rod is a sweetheart. Great find.
How does she cast a 4lb or better a 1lb or .5 line ?
just kidding about .5

#16Hi Brian,
Thanks for the kind words Brian! I've used 2# and 4# mono on the ultra-light spinning rod and it casts them both equally well. But I've found I like it best as a fly rod using a WF4F line. With the big spinning rod guides it can really shoot some line
All the Best, Stan

#17Did I see that rod somewhere... maybe the eBay ? Excuse me, and sorry if I am wrong.
I saw one recently like it... not too long ago.
I bid on it... but got busy.
Great find. The other setup is gorgeous as well. What fun. I will be there at 7am tomorrow at the pond.
In my mind, right there with you.

#19Glad to see you're enjoying life Stan, nice catches. Steve Moore and I went for bluegill yesterday evening on Chillhowee and had a blast with poppers. Didn't hurt that Steve caught 4 bass too.
