This piece of black walnut ought to make more than a couple shadow box frames!

That is nice looking. Locally sourced? I had some from my dad, helped a coworker chunk up a fallen tree, sat in the garage for at least 30 yrs before I got some. Made a nice simple coffee table with it.

Oil finish on walnut; not much prettier than that.

Yes, it came from 10 miles from my home. It can certainly be pretty stuff! We have a few butternut on our property up in New Brunswick that make pretty stuff as well (same genus as walnut).

Apparently butternut is being killed by a fungus and is at risk

Sad to have another species being attacked.

Gorgeous board Gary!! Take your time and do it justice, it's lovely stuff.

I have over 2200 bd. ft of it in my hobby shop from taking trees down in the mid 80's and not being able to afford buying the stuff. 300 ft has been kilned (but that was 20 yrs ago) and the remainder aired for 4 yrs in my garage and then home in a spare room. Some planed, most still rough sawn...I have a planer! And it's all flat as a pancake!

I love the stuff but my woodworking hobbies have taken a different direction and now I'm considering getting rid of 90% of it. It's tough though...I just love wood! Anyone here w/a truck and close to MPLS gimme a call... :hat

Take your time with this guy, she's a beaut.!!! Most of all have fun...

Jeremy.
