Orvis Trinket Gadget post - with photos

Ha ha.. better to test it now...

I've always been a big fan of the Orvis gadgets and tools.
Like the Tippy Tool.

Got a cool gadget or trinket made by the old Orvis Co ? Lets see it.

What a great idea... and I already took it off and used it.

Some things were just handy and could be remade by the Orvis Co.

47 years is how long it takes to buy your first scarf... for some.

Chinch knot ??

Brian

I've never seen a gold nipper knife and didn't know about them. I don't know how common the stainless model is.

Best,
Greg

OK, I'll play. This is just what I could scrape up in a few minutes of effort. Left to right, top to bottom:

Three groove knot tool
Small magnetic fly box
Small magnetic gadget leash
Orvis tippet master (copy of Olson gut cutter)
Leader/shooting head wallet
Angler's Image FF knife (Orvis version)
Record catch pin (released)
Swiss Army type FF knife (Japanese manufacture - Kershaw?)
Kershaw nipper knife
Bottom: Fly threader/knot tool

That's quite a collection Paul. The Anglers Image knives are great... I didn't know they marked one for Orvis.

Any one tool perform exceptionally well ?
or not so well ?

I feel like the nipper knife is clunky to use, almost as bad as a Walton's Thumb. Neat gadget but not much good in use. The Orvis "swiss army" tool is a bit better, you can see the nippers just swivel out and they're good to go. There's a little hook hone on the other side. The Angler's Image FF knives are really sweet pocket knives. I keep one in my gear bag. But still a bit complicated when you're standing in a run and the gnats are swarming your head.

I think the three groove knot needle has potential, it's beautifully machined brass. I'll give it a trial soon.

The best zinger ever made by anyone in my opinion. Years ago my son was playing in a baseball tournament in Cooperstown NY and I walked into the Orvis shop not expecting anything spectacular. I had two of these zingers already and knew they were out of production.

This shop had four of them in stock and I bought all four. Yes, they were far more expensive than any other zinger before or since but they were worth the money. Unlike all other zingers, these have a screw-back attachment not a clip or pin. Read, they never fall off. They last forever also. The retractor never seems to wear out even after getting rained on many times. I still use the first one I bought and that was over 20 years ago as I recall. Even back then they were $20 bucks.

They are impossible to find now, unfortunately.

Tough thread to add to !

Paul's "Tippet Master" is a tough one to find, as are the "Nippers"

Here's one I've only seen a few times ...

Dean, I sold one of those on Angling Marketplace a few months ago. Surprisingly good bidding and it ended up living in Japan.

Neat looking tool... been eyeing it in the 1979 catalog... which looks like this :

Back in the days of the VFS - I was lucky enough to move 63 of these using the Dutch auction process...

Not sure if they work yet... ha ha!

Here's a couple of zingers, ceramic nippers and a 1975 booklet.

This leader wallet and squeeze-open fly box (?) were in an old Orvis bag I bought. Have to say I've never used either...

I spent most of my money on shotguns, fly rods, guitars and banjos. The rest I just wasted. (Apologies to W.C. Fields)
