Well, I guess they're OK, but they're not good eatin' when they're that big. Too tough.

This impressive Montana bull trout was calculated to weigh a bit over 11 pounds (based on length and girth).  It took a size 2 Double Bunny tied for me by Scott Sanchez, the originator and was subdued on my all-time favorite Big Fish Rod, an 8.5' 3/2  7/8 WT W & McG Waterseal that I finished from a blank.  This is a "very Colorado" outfit since I bought the blank at Bob & Betty's rod shop in Denver; the 3.5" MW Beaudex was Hank Roberts' personal reel and has his name printed on the reverse, and the line was an old Garcia "Lee Wulff" WF 7F I bought at Gart Bros. Sportcastle from the Sale Table.

The rod is straight and strong today as it was when I first put it together in 1982.

PS - The reason for my un-characteristic attire is: these bull trout were found at the end of a 7-mile hike.

Went out on Friday and tried out a rod made by S.A. Gray that I picked up recently on Ebay. I was drifting nymphs under a Stimulator and caught a few rainbows, including this 26" specimen.  Sure beats lying in the hospital.

When I reflect back on it I’d have to say I haven’t caught any particularly huge trout on a cane rod. The largest is probably a 7 pound rainbow of about 25 inches taken on a sz 18 trico. It was around 25 years ago while fishing a Montague 9 foot 6 wt and a Pflueger Medalist 1494 1/2. It was actually an excellent rod in many ways. Until it was left on the trunk of my car and discovered the next day on the side of the highway in splinters. The loss spurred me on to buy a lot of rods.

That would have to be the incredible wild rainbow I caught on Big Spring in Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley in June 2013. This was when the wild rainbows were flourishing before the State decided to undo what Nature had done to heal the stream after anglers stopped them from polluting it with their hatchery. She was 25 1/2" long and 17 3/4" in girth, calculated at better than ten pounds. Taken on my special size 18 caddis dry on my 7 1/2' 5 weight Dream Catcher flyrod made for me by Wyatt Dietrich - a very apply named stick!

Caneghost - spectacular trout from a special stream on a treasure of a rod. A fish of several lifetimes I’d say. Congratulations, that’s one you will NEVER forget I’m certain!

Cutty on the Little NF of the CDA River. Probably in the 18"+ range and over 2 lbs.

This 27 inch male brown caught in 1972 from the now impounded Little Tennessee River took a thunder creek rainbow pattern on an Orvis 7 foot Battenkill. Landed and released right at dusk and photo from a friends Brownie camera in very poor light. Knoxville paper outdoor editor ran a front page story on this catch that emphasized the relatively unheard of concept of catch and release.

That must've been an experience with a Marvel. Did it take a set after that catch?
