And you cannot pay any attention to the estimates.

Haha, yes. This seems to be one of those times where the auction house truly did a disservice to the sellers, but the internet won out.

Can you provide more details about this auction? I doubt the spinning reels added much to the final value, If that Wedding Cake is a #4, that alone could be 15k

$21k + 30% Auction Fee. Thomas Lenk was a past President of Mitchell Company. These reels are from his estate.

That auction was all about the rare Mitchell reels. Everything else was probably icing on the cake to the buyer. I wouldn't be surprised to see the buyer unload the fly reels to recoup some of the cost.

More likely the opposite in this case. The gold Mitchell is a known reel, with a rumored five in existence. As far as I know, this is the first one to see daylight. It's probable that it will be sold again in a venue more widely seen by collectors of such things.

Back in 2005 that very same gold plated Mitchell sold for roughly $15K.

The hammer price was all about that reel.

I am surprised that a #1/5 gold Micthell spinning reel can achieve such value.

You gotta love the Garcia line sticker on that big gold Bogdan.
" There's no such thing as a fly fisherman wholly satisfied with his casting performance. " ~ Jim Green (1971)
" Just once I wish a trout would wink at me. " ~ Brian Shaffer

Brian, current belief among Mitchell scholars is that only one gold reel was ever created.
The 5 reels mentioned in the literature are now believed to be Silver reels awarded to distributors, with only one Gold version for CEO Thomas Lenk. The White reel is unique in being the only one marked as a DL (de luxe).

fascinating, thanks all..

my dream spinning reel in the early 70s was the Mitchell 308, still have mine and still fish it.. would rather have that reel than a golden wallhanger but it is quite a spectacle..
